Oh! Cool talk and important task, but in this case, it turned out that all general LLMs performed better than the fine-tuned, task-specific, language-specific LLMs for NER in Urdu, in this talk at #DH2025 on "Leveraging LLMs for NER Task on Historical Literary Data in Urdu as a Low-Resource Right-to-Left Language", by Saniya Irfan, Arjun Ghosh, Sumeet Agarwal.

Lot's of cool topics coming up in the session on "Automating Text Processing with LLMs & Data Visualization Tools" at #DH2025...

All talks listed here: https://www.conftool.pro/dh2025/index.php?page=browseSessions&form_session=193&presentations=show

@anwagnerdreas @jomla @stefan_hessbrueggen @felwert @christof Openness can evolve with user needs, sure—and maybe it’s less about any single component, and more about whether diverse communities can shape, adapt, or migrate their work if their context or priorities change. I wonder if clear “exit strategies” and open data standards are as important as code openness for building resilient, future-proof research environments. Transparency in these areas could help everyone win.

Okay, allow me to extend that question...

What we also know is that (renowned, market-dominating) commercial scientific publishers apply large scale self-censorship against their own authors, since long, by carefully following all demands of governments like China in terms of blocking Chinese users from many research papers. (Source: https://www.reuters.com/article/world/springer-nature-blocks-access-to-certain-articles-in-china-idUSKBN1D14IE/) Self-censorship is bad enough.

But is this really all? Only China? Only big publishers? Only self-censorship?

Der Boomer-Soli macht wieder einen Generationenkonflikt auf, wo keiner ist.

Der Konflikt muss zu den Überreichen getragen werden.

It's a well-known fact that authoritarian regimes like China are blocking lots of educational content from foreign countries, since many years. (Screenshot from https://www.usenix.org/system/files/sec21-hoang.pdf) I am wondering though if research publishers, or even specific journals or articles are being targeted by authoritarian online-censorship as well. I must admit that I can hardly find research about that. Do you have any ideas, have you ever read about such phenomena? Any hint is welcome, please retoot liberally!☺️

Delighted to join #dh2025 conference this week at Lisbon. I will share some recent works we've been doing @ouestware .

This afternoon I will participate to the @dhtech workshop to speak about how we built a static website to publish the enrollment registers from École des Beaux-Arts de Paris: https://regarts.huma-num.fr

I will focus more specifically on how we built historical basemaps using pmtiles from @protomaps to avoid anachronisms and respect our no-api constraint.

On Wednesday I will present, with Charlotte Ribeyrol, Arnaud Dubois and @julieblanc, the Chromobase a narrative-driven dataset on the 19th-century Colour Revolution.

https://chromobase.huma-num.fr/

We designed a digital academic publication where narratives written by scholars are the starting-points to build a mesh of human and non-human actors who took part of the colour revolution.

Before our paper is published you can find more information on @julieblanc website (https://julie-blanc.fr/projects/chromobase/) who designed the chromobase website.

We built this thanks to the amazing headless CMS keystone.js (https://keystonejs.com/) and static website generator @astro

On Thursday @jacomyal and I will present Gephi Lite the web lighter version of @Gephi.

You can with Gephi Lite do visual network analysis directly in your web browser. By default no server is used: your data does not travel the cloud. Using it is as simple as opening this url: https://gephi.org/gephi-lite/

You can design your network visualisation by curating the appearance (node/edge colour, size, labels), filter your network, run layout algorithms or add new metrics.

It's also possible to embed it in existing web application using a Broadcast Channel browser API. Integrating visual network analysing in your research app is now quite simple.

On Friday we will assist @jacomyma in presenting his poster about The irreductionist hermeneutics of the Grounded AI Map.

We were proud to build the map web companion https://grounding-ai.github.io/web-application/

Learn more about the map here: https://mas.to/@jacomyma/114341764362664159
or there: https://grounding-ai.github.io/

I will be at #DH2025 the whole week. Will be a pleasure to chat with new folks, ping me if interested in meeting around coffee or lunch.

@paulanomalie @jacomyma great presentations. Alas I could not make it to DH this year. Enjoy the event!

Cc @dmontagne peut être que ca peut t'intéresser ?

@paulanomalie @jacomyal @Gephi

@justinmponcet Je la propose en formation quand les admins sont très pointilleux sur l'installation des logiciels.
Une bonne alternative !

Wonderful! Been waiting for this! Three questions… what browsers will be supported? What data formats can be imported? other than screenshots what graphical formats of the network diagrams can be exported?

@Valdis @jacomyal @Gephi
We test Firefox and Chrome.

You can import GEXF and Graphml for now. If you have CSV, use Gephi or table2net https://medialab.github.io/table2net/ to generate GEXF. We might add more format in future.

About export. you can export Gexf or picture. If you want to share a network online you have two choices :
- for exploration sharing consider using Retina https://ouestware.gitlab.io/retina/
- for edition sharing you can open (a CORS enabled) hosted gexf/graphml file directly in Gephi Lite like that one: https://gephi.org/gephi-lite/?gexf=https%3A%2F%2Fouestware.gitlab.io%2Fretina%2F1.0.0-beta.1%2Fdataset.gexf

In the future we would like to add publication features by merging retina into Gephi Lite or create an official Gephi web viewer.
