Passing this link on from the fractal anarchism community on slrpnk.net. It's probably just a reminder or reinforcement for a lot of folks on here but it makes a good case for building community wherever possible, as a foundation for other action:

Seven reasons why hosting a silly little potluck (or game night, or porch hang, or book club, or group hike) is essential to defeating fascism

Honestly, I don't think we'll win if you don't

The leaderless character of the resistance to ICE in Minnesota is precisely what has made it effective. The decentralized nature of the rapid response groups has made them durable and agile. The initiative of autonomous fighters in the neighborhoods has enabled people to rise in revolt every time they have shot or murdered our neighbors. The horizontality of our mutual aid networks makes them opaque to the feds while enabling them to feed, clothe, and care for vulnerable families.

I want my skills sharp, kept sharp by looking things up and thinking for myself, the same way walking everywhere keeps me healthy.

I'm enriched by the random things I learn and random skills I pick up while doing so.

I don't want to be unable to do the simplest thing without relying on a bloated planet-killing monstrosity.

Most of all, I don't want my entire life, mind, and experience reduced to the cognitive equivalent of a strip-mall.

A friend sent me this Covid Policy Statement (from a church in Vancouver, Canada) and I feel so seen that I'm in tears. It's well written and relatively comprehensive. It is also an astonishing example of care and compassion combined with science to inform an approach to covid.

I'm sharing it here for the many Fedi friends who may be heartened by it or find it useful.

Why are we still masking?

Some people might wonder why St. Margaret’s continues to take precautions against the spread of Covid in our community when it feels like the rest of the world has moved on. Our decision may make...

@pluralistic Hi, we are a group of parents in Vancouver that are trying to push back against local school board plans to deploy Microsoft Copilot into classrooms.

We have started a petition to show that parents are concerned and do not consent to their children using genAI in classrooms.

It would help so much if you could share it.

Just assembled a page on my personal website with instructions on how to disable AI features across many services(mainly ones I encounter/use, will surely have to add more to the list soon).

Doctorow on Solar Transition in far better shape than we're given to believe

"the material bill for solarization is in freefall, with no end in sight. The amount of stuff we need to make panels, transmission lines and batteries keeps declining. Further: the efficiency gains of “clean” technology are astounding — meaning that, for example, it not only takes a lot less material to make a solar panel, the panel we make out of so much less stuff generates a lot more power. More: we keep finding ways to substitute more abundant materials for materials that are harder to find or refine (for example, swapping out lithium in batteries and replacing it with sodium, one of the most abundant minerals on Earth). Finally: we keep finding new sources of the materials that we can’t readily substitute for"
