British early #medieval historian (pre-christian to christian transition) turned #folklorist and #storyteller. I have a mission to re-enchant, my home, the #IsleofWight by telling the stories that were taught to me & the ones that the wind whispers in my sleep.
A little bit obsessed with the #Jutes, early medieval art, a whole lot obsessed with old #gods and "#AngloSaxon" #saints (especially local & unattested).
Join me as I tell my stories; nothing is made up, just remembered differently.

ARTISTS! How about a 'Sketch to Final' comparison?

I'll start!

(one of) the initial sketches and colour tests for my 'An Féar Gortach / The Hungry Grass' Piece.

I hired a model who self-shot and sent me great photos to work from for this piece.

It was important to get the feeling and message right with this piece because of the subject matter: a piece of folklore that arose from the Irish Famine.

There were two notable moderation incidents on mastodon.social and mastodon.online in the past 24 hours that I would like to address. In the first, a post was wrongfully removed due to a report claiming it contained a dogwhistle, and in the second, a person was wrongfully suspended due to a report claiming it's an impersonator. Both were undone and apologies issued.

So my #masterdon instance is up; now just awaiting it start getting some feeds and being part of the #fediverse

I will be migrating over there tomorrow I suspect.

They say a mermaid takes delight in tricking sailors and mariners, leading them to their deaths; the truth is they just don’t care. Their blood runs cold and so do their hearts, they do not know love, nor compassion nor empathy of any kind. It is even true, that they don’t even understand delight or pleasure.

These traits are what makes them the the most dangerous of creatures.

Artwork by me.

🦢💔🦢Irish mythology tells of The Children of Lir, cursed by their jealous stepmother to live as swans for 900 years. The spell was broken at the ringing of the first church bells - but the moment they regained their human forms they perished of extreme old age.

I have many interesting Christmas/Midwinter food folklore facts to share and I was hoping to present them 1 per day 1-23 December. Is that something people would enjoy do you think?

Last year I found some horrible, plastic advertising baubles in the street.
Today I turned half a bauble into a mask, inspired by the description of "All colours, Sam" or "The Sandown Clown" a fascinating, berry-eating alien-ghost-robot with wooden parts. I first heard of it in a podcast where @Wihtlore told the story.

My mask is (losely) based on the description of Sam in #BUFORA magazine, rather than the drawing on the cover and inspired by Princess Mononoke's mask.

Things I find myself following a lot of on #Mastodon that I didn't even know I'd be interested in, because the bird site algorithm never told me about them:

(I feel like I have @Curator and @Wihtlore mostly to thank for these newly-discovered interests.)

@gkountourides I'm assuming you're already familiar with this crossover point between your research and your distraction, but just in case, here's a #Folklorist (a good one, too) on #folklore of #menstruation https://link.springer.com/book/10.1057/978-1-137-48775-9
