To everyone following this account (and hopefully getting something useful from it). please note that I am moving to fediscience. My new account is @Westcoastbirder.

If I do the migration right, all of you will automatically continue to follow me, but if something goes wrong with the move, please do consider manually staying connected.

@WestCoastBirder I've been watching this wonderful series on YouTube by New England Forests. I just started one on Beaver Pond Wildlife. I think your son would enjoy it as it's a lot about birds in the New England woods and the photography is excellent.

Hello everyone!

Something was wrong with the left leg of this nuthatch in my backyard. I don't know if his claw is stuck in an acorn or something or if that is a tumor or some abnormal growth. He was managing, although almost got stuck in the suet feeder a couple of times. Any ideas?

A flock of house finches visited my garden. Noisy and active, they dominated the feeders for a while. The coloration of the males ranges from an almost purplish color to orange-yellow. Apparently, it is related to each individual's diet. Here are a couple:

Saw juncos visiting the suet feeder all day. I know juncos sometimes eat insects although they are predominantly seed eaters, but I didn't think they'd consume suet. Had white- breasted nuthatches visit. Hopefully, they'll be regulars at the suet feeder.

I haven't talked the leaves for several weeks and we have about a six inch thick layer of decaying plant matter all over the garden. I decided to leave it that way. It was a beautiful day today in Portland and I was out on the deck, listening two about two dozen Oregon juncos scrounging around in there. So quiet except for the sounds of their claws and their little tzeet-tzeets. Lovely birds, juncos, so industrious!

A Townsend's chipmunk visited my backyard today. I don't think I've seen them visit before. Also, Steller's jays have been coming to the feeders regularly. I need to add more cayenne pepper to the seeds in the tray feeder, as the squirrels are eating most of the seeds now.
