Aha it is a korimako not just a tui mimic
#backyardbirding

Good morning! Today's small friend is this juvenile downy woodpecker. It's on its own now, which means it's probably been out of the nest for at least three weeks, but it's still learning that it's unwise to try and horn in on starling time at the suet. It's very cute, though. 🖤 🤍❤️

(I use "it" here because both male and female juveniles have the reddish cap, so it's pretty much impossible to distinguish.)

Today's small friend is this unrepentant sinner. She doesn't just eat the buds, she eats the flowers—which makes me suspect that she's actually here for the nectar.

TIL this is the species of crow that visits my garden. #BackyardBirding https://merlinbirds.org/species/fiscro

Hearing Eastern Wood-Pewee do their song/call outside right now <3

Lowkey love them. Either I'm finally noticing them (odd, because I would've if they were here) or they've finally shown up here.

Today's small friend is this extremely cooperative blue jay. 💙

Today's small friend is this -suet thief- blue jay. A bit blurry in the crest and tail regions because he just wouldn't stop moving. 💙

Today's small friends are a juvenile downy woodpecker and a juvenile grackle, both waiting for parents to return with food. Not shown here, but the flying skills of both young animals leave something to be desired. 😅

Today's small friend is this newly fledged juvenile common grackle. Soon enough, it will be bronzed. But today is not that day.

I've been thinking about getting an "action camera" for a while now. The main thing I would use it for is as a "behind the scenes" or "more of the scene" when I'm out documenting our local Swainson's Hawks - adding to the storytelling.

Currently leaning *heavily* towards the DJI Osmo Nano. Apart from the price (oof) it checks pretty much every box for me, including the small size and being able to attach it to the hot shoe of my DSLR via magnet.

Anyone familiar with the brand (DJI) and/or this specific model, action cameras in general? Using it alongside your main camera? Recommendations for similar (other than GoPro)?
