Young Flicker Update. Wednesday (June 17), the young Northern Flicker left the nest and flew 30 yards away to a brushy area. Later, I heard it making its "TIUU" call, and probably the parents are still looking after it.

Chipping Sparrow. I wondered why the little chipping sparrows were always around when I was near the perennial flowerbed. Turns out, their nest is in the little crabapple tree.

The young Northern Flicker sticks its head out of the opening and makes a loud “TIUU” every few seconds. The parents communicate from the trees across the street (staccato calls at about 4 and 18 seconds in the recording).
