@historleans
There's a lot we'll be able to learn about pyroclastic density currents from this event too, when the time is right.
@historleans I haven't seen this yet. It's still very prominent here in New Zealand, with the court case ongoing. Particularly in the Volcanology community, it's a point of real sadness, a great sense of tragedy, that's also driving people to do better. There was a screening of it at the conference, with a discussion panel including local scientists involved. Sadly I missed it. There's mourning, but also learning.

Hi Folks!

Here's my #Introduction for #spore.

I am a #geochemist, #geologist, and Earth system modeller studying past #climate, #climatechange, and the global #carboncycle.

Aside from my main research, I've led a couple white papers on #inclusion in #fieldwork and am generally interested in social #justice, and #research #ethics in #geoscience, #HigherEducation and beyond.

Our article on the Equator Research School is now out in print and online! https://geoscientist.online/sections/unearthed/widening-participation-lessons-from-the-equator-research-school/

We reflect on the aims of the school, it's success, and give recommendations for those wishing to create their own.

Widening participation: Lessons from the Equator Research School - GEOSCIENTIST

The racial and ethnic diversity crisis in geoscience in the Global North is now well-documented in both the UK and USA (for example, Bernard and Cooperdock, 2018; Dutt, 2020; Dowey et al., 2021). This is an issue throughout the pipeline of academic progress and careers (Leading Routes, 2019): low numbers of students from diverse backgrounds […]

Attached: 1 image The Diva makes her Entrance. Inspired by my hope to one day, see a volcanic eruption in person (from a safe distance) :) and by a fascinating series of Arte documentaries on volcanoes and people living near them. When seen from a few kilometers away, eruptions seem so slow and elegant... The danger and destruction become abstract notions, only the majestic beauty of the lava remains. Like a diva making her entrance into the world.

' Many of the Kenyan excavators ... had expert local knowledge about the ancient sites, including their geology, histories and oral traditions. This knowledge was highly prized by the European scholars, who rarely did any digging themselves. But it was colonial practice, to intentionally “forget” the contributions of Africans to African history, [Prof George] Abungu said. “And the scholars went along with that.” '

ICYMI: Mauna Loa in Hawai'i erupted for the first time in nearly 40 years last night. The lava flows are confined to the upper slopes of the volcano right now, but things can change quickly. The UKHE system is broken

70,000 of us are going on strike as our terms & conditions, wages & pension rights are all under attack

The UK higher education sector has £40bn in reserves - it can afford to pay staff decent wages and give them proper contracts

Pay is down by 25%.

Nov 20th every year - Women effectively work the rest of the year for free - earning £4k less than men

There is need for investment in coordinated, funded, ring-fenced programmes to improve equity in research, along the pipeline, that join up holistically to be as impactful as possible- that build trust & work with, & remunerate, stakeholder communities.

We need to remove inequity at all levels of research, both within and outside of academia. We need funders and leaders to engage with EDI specialists & communities to fund, promote, support & disseminate anti-discriminatory best practise

Three of our participants in Equator wrote about their experiences. Their reflections are striking.
