Hi Folks!
Here's my #Introduction for #spore.
I am a #geochemist, #geologist, and Earth system modeller studying past #climate, #climatechange, and the global #carboncycle.
Aside from my main research, I've led a couple white papers on #inclusion in #fieldwork and am generally interested in social #justice, and #research #ethics in #geoscience, #HigherEducation and beyond.

Inspired by my hope to one day, see a volcanic eruption in person (from a safe distance) :) and by a fascinating series of Arte documentaries on volcanoes and people living near them. When seen from a few kilometers away, eruptions seem so slow and elegant... The danger and destruction become abstract notions, only the majestic beauty of the lava remains. Like a diva making her entrance into the world.

The UKHE system is broken
70,000 of us are going on strike as our terms & conditions, wages & pension rights are all under attack
The UK higher education sector has £40bn in reserves - it can afford to pay staff decent wages and give them proper contracts
Pay is down by 25%.
Nov 20th every year - Women effectively work the rest of the year for free - earning £4k less than men

There is need for investment in coordinated, funded, ring-fenced programmes to improve equity in research, along the pipeline, that join up holistically to be as impactful as possible- that build trust & work with, & remunerate, stakeholder communities.
We need to remove inequity at all levels of research, both within and outside of academia. We need funders and leaders to engage with EDI specialists & communities to fund, promote, support & disseminate anti-discriminatory best practise

Our key learning? That collaboratively-created, fully-funded, discipline-specific, ring-fenced, inclusively-designed interventions WORK.
We have created 'how to' guides for (1) anyone wanting to create their own interventions to improve access into postgraduate research and (2) those involved in doctoral training programs and PhD recruitment, to make doctoral recruitment more equitable.
