About to finish #PhD in molecular microbiology/virology? Join us as #postdoc at the BSRC in St Andrews and work with Michael Nevels and me to study mechanisms underlying the devastating synergy of #GroupAStrep and #ChickenPox co-infections. Research Fellow – AR2823MR

Research Fellow – AR2823MR , School of Biology, Biomedical Sciences Research Complex, Salary: £37,099 - £44,263 per annum, Fixed Term: 12 months, Start: 1 September 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter , <p style="text-align: justify;"> Bacterial-viral co-infections are a widely recognised clinical phenomenon, often causing more severe symptoms and complicating treatment. The underlying pathogenicity mechanisms are poorly understood. This project will investigate how innate immune and inflammatory responses to viral infections induce changes in host cells that render them more susceptible to bacterial infection. Specifically, the project will address how infections with human cytomegalovirus and varicella zoster virus, both members of the herpesvirus family, affect the ability of group A streptococci to adhere to and invade human cells.  </p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> </p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> We wish to recruit a postdoctoral Research Fellow to pursue this project. The successful applicant will have a PhD degree in the fields of virology, microbiology, or related disciplines with a strong interest in studying host-pathogen interactions using cellular and molecular approaches.   </p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> </p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> This full-time post is available from 1st September 2023 for initially one year.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> </p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> The project will be based in the Nevels and Schwarz-Linek laboratories in the Biomedical Sciences Research Complex at the University of St Andrews.   </p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> </p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> Further information and informal enquiries may be directed to Dr Michael Nevels (<a href="mailto:[email protected]" target="_blank">[email protected]</a>) and Dr Uli Schwarz-Linek (<a href="mailto:[email protected]" target="_blank">[email protected]</a>).   </p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> </p> <p style="text-align: justify;">Applications are particularly welcome from women, people from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community, and other protected characteristics who are under-represented in professional posts at the University.   </p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> </p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> Equality, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of the St Andrews experience. We strive to create a fair and inclusive culture demonstrated through our commitment to diversity awards (Athena Swan, Carer Positive, LGBT Charter, Race Charters and Stonewall). I'm thrilled to share that I have been promoted to Professor @UniofNewcastle! I'll be Chair of Structural Microbiology from 1st August 2023. Looking forward to continue my research in @nubiosciences 1/

I'd like to thank my amazing team, particularly @barwinskasendra whose amazing work and support has been key.

The Streptococcus pyogenes vaccine landscape - npj Vaccines

Recent efforts have re-invigorated the Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus) vaccine development field, though scientific, regulatory and commercial barriers persist, and the vaccine pipeline remains sparse. There is an ongoing need to accelerate all aspects of development to address the large global burden of disease caused by the pathogen. Building on over 100 years of S. pyogenes vaccine development, there are currently eight candidates on a product development track, including four M protein-based candidates and four candidates designed around non-M protein antigens. These candidates have demonstrated proof of concept for protection against S. pyogenes in preclinical models, one has demonstrated safety and immunogenicity in a Phase 1 trial and at least four others are poised to soon enter clinical trials. To maintain momentum, the Strep A Vaccine Global Consortium (SAVAC) was established to bring together experts to accelerate global S. pyogenes vaccine development. This article highlights the past, present and future of S. pyogenes vaccine development and emphasizes key priorities, and the role of SAVAC, in advancing the field.

We recently trialled the Direct Electron Apollo on our JEOL CryoARM 300. We collected test data on TMV at several magnifications. I processed one dataset to 1.85 angstroms resolution. The map is available at EMDB - EMD-16572, and the raw data are at EMPIAR -11404. Data collected at the Scottish Centre for Macromolecular Imaging by chief microscope wrangler James Streetley. Virus prepared by Andrew Love’s group at the Hutton Institute.

Finally got around to trying #modelangelo - wow.
Three chains build into a boxed asymmetric unit of a virus capsid resolved to 2.5 angstroms. Some minor tinkering to get to a pretty comprehensive and accurate model ready for refinement - and fast. Thanks @SjorsScheres
