As a kid I liked taking things apart. Ever since I'm learning how to put them back together again.

A couple of weeks back I've had a #telegraphy QSO in #morsecode with the Cap San Diego in #Hamburg. It is a cargo ship from the early 1960s that has been turned into a museum. In its radio operation room a group of former maritime radio operators have set up a amateur radio station.
In the QSO I've been invited so today I paid a visit to the ship and the station. (1/2)

I finally got the data transfer from the AISC110C high-speed camera sensor working!

It's a 5€ chip that outputs 80x120 video at up to 40k fps.

Data is read with a Xilinx Spartan7 and transmitted via USB3 with a Cypress FX3, each on its own little PCB.

The front PCB is exchangeable, making this a neat modular platform. I already have an analog video frontend with the ADV7182 and am working on a Cameralink interface.

Videos are coming tomorrow, I need more light for the high framerates.

Bluesky is where you find the people who think they ought to run the Internet.

Mastodon is where you find the people who actually do run the Internet, and kind of wish they didn't.

RF/microwave be like: everything is a waveguide or resonator when the frequency is high enough. Circuit board? Power plane resonance and edge reflections. Coax cables? When you have circular waveguide modes they become useless. Connectors? The plastic supporting "beads" have resonances. In 2011 it was discovered that even the center pins of a 1.85 mm coax plug and socket can resonate at 50 GHz if they're made too perfect with a near-zero gap - exactly what you do for metrological-grade connectors , thus explaining strange errors in national labs from the early 2000s. #electronics

If y'all got 40 mins to spare and wondered what impedance (or reactance) actually is, Nick from M0NTV made a really good video illustrating it: X

Dear people in Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Denmark, France and Sweden:
your government is about to squander your #privacy by creating a law forcing scanning of all your app conversations.

To celebrate #ErieCanal200 did a quick activation of us-6532, which covers a large area of New York. Got hunted by @N4JAW from a park, which is great, so now the question is was it a bike 2 bike as well?

Yesterday, I participated as a supervisor at a local youth organization's children's festival and organized the draussenfuchs.de fox hunt. A total of almost 300 children attended the festival, and about 90 fox hunts took place. It was a lot of fun. But in the evening, I fell straight into bed.

I gave a presentation to a #hamRadio license course audience regarding used radios. I recommended, and still do, to consider buying used rigs. I talk about different kinds of rigs and explain some measurement values (particularly IP3) and what they say about rig quality.

That talk is 10 years old now. The material it presents is good to know if you're interested in pre-SDR rigs.

The talk is in German. Lasting 100 minutes, it is also quite a mouthful.

This is impressive: a fully responsive website template system based on Star Trek’s LCARS operating system, built with only HTML & CSS – no images. Made by Jim Robertus, based on the original designs by Michael Okuda.
