I think about this graphic at least once a week. What vehicles do to our towns & cities…

Of all those amazing writers still out on strike #StarTrek geeks are definitely my favorite. đź––

I spent most of the time I've been trying to run a game company regretting the early decision to not use Unity for my project. But reading this, I'm really, really, *really* glad I don't have Unity anywhere in my stack

Things that stand out here:

- The pricing plan is baffling. It's like they designed it to make it impossible for you to make rational decisions about what you're getting into
- If they bait-switch you like this now, what will they do in ANOTHER 2 years?

Unity plan pricing and packaging updates | Unity Blog

In January 2024, Unity will introduce a new Unity Runtime Fee based on game installs. Prior to this, Unity subscription plans will add cloud-based asset storage, Unity DevOps tools, and AI at runtime at no additional cost.

Huh, so Unity has reached the killing-the-golden-goose point of their enshittification: https://www.gamedeveloper.com/business/unity-to-start-charging-fee-pegged-to-game-installs

20c per install doesn't sound like much to PC users, but that's potentially enough to nuke mobile gaming entirely. Which they know, because they also run the stats system mobile devs use to calculate ARPU/ARPPU.

Unreal taking a small cut of revenue works fine. That's based on you know, money you made.

Unity charging based on "Installs" might actually cost you money in mobile space. Or if you do a PS+ freebie. Or GamePass. Or especially an EpicStore freebie. They know what they're doing, and it's fucking evil.

EDIT: looks like it's a one time fee per install, the "monthly" is just poorly explained, as confirmed in a forums reply from a random employee, naturally

Unity introducing new fee attached to game installs

Unity's new "Runtime Fee" will kick in after developers cross specific revenue and install thresholds.

Went on CNN to explain why writers are striking, ended up roasting their bosses' salary.
Reflecting on the start of the Iraq War 20 years later. I cannot overstate how appallingly one-sided the news coverage was in the US during the buildup to the invasion.

Not the odds, but the stakes.

That's my shorthand for the organizing principle we most need among journalists covering the 2024 campaign.

Not who has what chances of winning, but the consequences for Americans and their democracy. What is likely to happen if... Again and again.

Not the odds, but the stakes.
