I recently read about Google potentially silent loading an AI model onto my computer: https://www.thatprivacyguy.com/blog/chrome-silent-nano-install. So I thought I would have a go at preventing it happening.

For my sins I still use Chrome on Windows. In chrome://flags/ I searched for "AIM", "AI-mode", & "gemini" and enabled/disabled experiments as was appropriate.

Then I followed this advice: https://pureinfotech.com/stop-chrome-gemini-nano-download-windows-11/ to make a registry change to (hopefully) prevent Google forcing local AI models on me

Google Chrome is downloading a 4 GB Gemini Nano model onto users' machines without consent, with no opt-in, no opt-out short of enterprise tooling, and an automatic re-download every time the user deletes it. The pattern is identical to the Anthropic Claude Desktop case I wrote about last month, but the scale is between two and three orders of magnitude larger. This article does the legal analysis and, for the first time, the environmental analysis. The numbers are not small.
