@freedomofpress #Signal Messenger is still #centralized, it does not let people run their own servers to intercommunicate on the network, it still requires a phone number to use, and it is not transparent with their server code, so the public does not know exactly what is running on the server... so why tell people to use it with all these risks?

There are #decentralized solutions, such as #Matrix, which fit the same use case. If you really do #love someone, then do not tell them to use #SignalMessenger & instead encourage adoption of real #FLOSS.

The "UNIX v4 tape" running in simh PDP11 emu on IRIX:

I was asked by a family member why it was taking so long to paste something large into a new Microsoft Word document on their computer, I sarcastically replied it was because it takes a while to upload it all to the copilot AI nonense first. And then I realized accidentally I might be right...I disabled copilot in Word and it went back to being instant again

So that's cool that Microsoft seems uploading everything you paste into a new Word doc to their servers now.

Recent comic: Cutting out the Middleman

I suspect that some readers might interpret this cartoon as a call for Luddism, but mostly it's a reflection of thoughts I've been having lately about out-of-control data harvesting and a growing surveillance state.

An absolute film scanning unit at a photo lab in Flatbush, with a CRT, floppy drive and all!
Old IBM terminal with "battleship" keyboard still in use in a Canadian Tire store in 2018.
This right here. This is a perfect example of why I've fallen out of love with new tech. The required internet connection, everything having an app and an account, and putting a dang computer in everything. I guess if I ever need to replace my dishwasher I'll need to do extra research to make sure I buy a "dumb" one (and not a Bosch, unfortunately).

I won't connect my dishwasher to your stupid cloud
