Very important appointment for me today.

I have just visited the Minister for Land Information’s office in the Beehive (executive wing of government) to see my award-winning* Te Waipounamu/South Island #map on the wall

(*Best Print Map at the 2022 NZ National Map Exhibition)

We have beautiful geospatial emojis in the mapstodon.space

It’s here in the flesh!
So good to see my #ArthursPass and #Tongariro National Park poster maps in physical print form.
If you want a copy, they’re free with this month’s edition of Wilderness magazine.
Made in #QGIS and #Illustrator.

Blender #b3d workflow:

🌏Add UV sphere & image texture of Earth (plate carrée projection)

🔷Add a polyhedron (eg icosphere) & give it same material

🔗Add a Data Transfer modifier, and map the Face Corner Data from the sphere to the new object

✂️Add Subdiv to reduce distortion

Day 20 of #30DayMapChallenge 2022 – My favourite...

...summer activity is canyoning. So here's a map of the canyons in Arthur's Pass.

I created a series of symbols to encode the vertical and aquatic grading. I stopped short of also encoding the commitment grade and star rating.

Day 19 of #30DayMapChallenge 2022 – Globe

Platonic Earth

I've replaced the spherical Earth with each of the Platonic solids.
Map projections are now trivial: just unfold the polyhedral globe.

Here's the flat versions to cut out and fold back up: https://southarrowmaps.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/PlatonicEarth.pdf

I'll post all sorts of #map things here, but my full portfolio is on southarrowmaps.co.nz

I'm also in Insta, FB, & LinkedIn (links in bio)

Day 17 of #30DayMapChallenge 2022 – A map without a computer

For the "blue" themed day in last year's #30DayMapChallenge, I created a linework map of Kirikirikatata/Mount Cook Range in a blueprint style.

This year I actually, physically cyanotype blueprinted it.

Day 9 of #30DayMapChallenge 2022 – Space

Global rocket launch sites

Frequency proportional to number of launches since 1957, according to data from Jonathan's Space Report. Blue Marble and Black Marble images from #NASA Visible Earth.

Rockets not to scale.

Day 8 of #30DayMapChallenge 2022 – OpenStreetMap

I digitised the new houses in my area that weren't already on #OpenStreetMap.

These aren't yet in the LINZ Building Outlines dataset so they were manually digitised rather than easily imported.

Some are complex shapes...

...which got me wondering about how the shapes of houses in my neighbourhood range from a boring square up to chaotic buildings with 30+ corners.

And then there's some with curved walls that in my opinion is just cheating.
