Day 19 of #30DayMapChallenge 2022 – Globe

Platonic Earth

I've replaced the spherical Earth with each of the Platonic solids.
Map projections are now trivial: just unfold the polyhedral globe.

Here's the flat versions to cut out and fold back up: https://southarrowmaps.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/PlatonicEarth.pdf

#b3d

Blender #b3d workflow:

🌏Add UV sphere & image texture of Earth (plate carrée projection)

🔷Add a polyhedron (eg icosphere) & give it same material

🔗Add a Data Transfer modifier, and map the Face Corner Data from the sphere to the new object

✂️Add Subdiv to reduce distortion

@SouthArrowMaps Thanks for sharing! There's the 'Export paper model' add-on for Blender, to turn it into a real life object. (Didn't yet get it to work with the data transfer modifier though.)
@terglobo Yes, that's what I used to create the nets I linked to. It's a great add on!
@terglobo You have to apply the data transfer modifier first before exporting the paper model
@SouthArrowMaps What software did you use to make these projections? I’ve been wanting to do this for a rhombic dodecahedron, but maybe this is only easy for Platonic solids.
@geocorsair all in Blender. I’ve just replied to the original toot with the workflow
