We’re lucky to share our mountains with the world’s only alpine parrot — the clever and cheeky kea. Endemic to New Zealand, they’re full of personality… and mischief! If you’ve ever met one, you’ll know just how naughty they can be! They are extremely intelligent but will steal anything they are able to grab, as well as pulling trim off vehicles.

A Kea comes into land on a snow-covered tree in Arthur’s Pass National Park. Native to us here in New Zealand’s South Island, Kea are the world’s only alpine parrot—clever, curious, and full of mischief.

Arthur’s Pass tourists love kea, but locals are desperately trying to keep them away

A campaign to discourage New Zealand’s charismatic mountain parrot, the kea, from hanging out at a tourist hotspot appears to be working.

The Spinoff

Arthur’s Pass was open this morning, so we drove up to have a look (and go looking for Kea). It was on and off raining, but we are fairly lucky with most of our stops.

On the way back to Ōtautahi/Christchurch, a stop for a short #hike in Upper Ōtira Valley, near Arthur's Pass.

Today’s #WaterfallWednesday takes me back to #NewZealand , to The Devil’s Punchbowl Falls in #ArthursPass.

You approach the falls along the valley floor, before climbing many, many stairs to the viewing platform. It’s well worth the climb because you get close enough to the falls to feel the water thundering down the mountain, and misting your face.

Plus it’s downstairs all the way home, making you look all spry and agile to the poor sods who are on the long upstairs leg of the trip.

It’s here in the flesh!
So good to see my #ArthursPass and #Tongariro National Park poster maps in physical print form.
If you want a copy, they’re free with this month’s edition of Wilderness magazine.
