Hi, this is me. Who i am? I don't know. Do you?

I came here after getting tired of the trash instagram was stuffing down my throat. i heard the internet was once for geeks, so i went and looked for them.

@plbrault It's great to read your words. As someone currently considering repurposing an old gaming rig as a server, it's reassuring to hear that even worse setups can still run just fine.

Would you have any tips to consider for setting up random gear as server? Only thing i can think of atm is power consumption (and backups like u allready said)

@hmiron oh and more ideas:

Context: i am atm fighting against the Algorithms and big streaming sites which decide the content i am able to consume. Software like plex helps here (at least for streaming movies) but they need the setup to run and also someone who maintains them. I think, a "private netflix" could somehow be build but not only with friends but also with strangers.

And yes, while writing all this the complexity of the licenses dor all the movies downed upon me. Maybe license free movies (outdated ones) could be collected this way?

@hmiron my initial thought was "hm, good question, idk at the moment" but then more and mor ideas came to mind:

As prefix: i have not much homelab or selfhosting experience but....

::editAfterIWroteAll hosting websites for free for local comunities.

- thirst thing that came to my mind was distributing diskspace and computing power to the people from #datahoarder

- next thing would be a true open source #chatbot that does not train with your private data

- next could be stuff like remote gaming like #nvidiaNow

And i think there could be more possible uses.

I kinda guess that the upload bandwith is the limiting factor here, also the complexity of the interaction between all the setups. Did you find any ways to benefit the public with your gear allready?

I see a lot of people in the #SelfHosting and #HomeLab communities using complex setups comprising business-grade equipment.

I'm running 7 VMs on an old Dell OptiPlex desktop I got from a thrift store. I got my main SSD from the trash at an old job. I have files on a portable hard drive from 2009. Using salvaged hardware is half the fun of self-hosting for me. Good backups make up for unreliable hardware.

Hey fellow homelabers.

How can we have more impact with this hobby/skills?
I mean, how can we serve more people somehow instead of just us? Have a coop of sorts? Can we create a network to serve a purpose?

Throw ideas at this and perhaps boost for more reach.

@hmiron Just sharing my thoughts: A network of servers that can distribute the load would be great. Of course, anyone could use a paid service, but a solution where anyone who contributes computing power can also occasionally draw from it would be interesting.

🎶Hello darkness, my old friend...

Here i am talking to the void out there and thinking about who might answer.

And yet i ask a question to this void. A question AI could answer, or reddit, or any employee at my local vendor.

But you know, i like this void and the unpredictability of the answer it might give me.

Wow, sry, lost my thought there:

What smartphone gives me as much freedom and individuality as for example a RaspberryPi or any other linux pc?

Does anybody out there use smartphones that are not customer ware but customizable ware?

🎶 ...I've come to talk with you again...

Edit:
Well, writing a letter without any destination makes not much sense; #smartphone #diyphone #diy #mobilephone #hackyourphone #jailbreak #Android #linuxphone #soundofsilence #slender4fun #question #RaspberryPI #anotherimportanthashtag #andanother #andanotheronewhynot #thanksforreading #stillhere? #haveATreat

@demiurg uuuuuuh you hooked me there! Did you buy any software for the photogametry or how did you do it?

@Imperor

1. Collecting blocks in a reasonable place (wood, coal, etc) and building them wherever i want. - #Minecraft

2. Getting my spaceship. Entering the seat. Going out in to the open space. Flying to a place where i saw many dead ships on earlier visits. Scrape them if there are any. If i feel like scrape their hull in a powerwasher like mini gameloop. Stack their materials in my storageroom. Fly to a city. Sell the fruits of my honest work. - #starcitzen #vulture (scraping ship in star citizen)

@coolinthegame hi und hallo da drüben ;)

I don't know if i really would recomend #unreal because it is big.

While that is a good thing (you can spawn 2 million meshes with a foliage system without lag) you also need to know HOW you do this (where in other software you would come up yourself with a solution and thus have an understanding of it's functionality, because you've build it yourself.)

I think it is a bit like driving a tesla vs a moped. One is general nicer, but the other is gixable and understandable.
