@koboldcurrychef You may even enjoy playing those types of games with Your regular opponents - as in, the group provides the enjoyment.

Besides, the "short, tournament scenario" in VQ and HIS - in my experience - is not that short, because of all that diplomacy-ing and talking around the table :)

Have fun on Sunday!

Another project of mine - a game about robotic operatives doing SWAT-like things in a fictional s-f setting.

It is not really a serious SWAT like wargame but something that is meant for one player and offer some Line of Sight puzzles.

It is inspired by games like Phantom Brigade - when the action starts, units use Action Tiles of different lengths to represent the sequence of actions (move, shoot, close combat, breach) that they are executing.

This is also a part of 2025 Wargame Print and Play Jam - the theme is "armor".

In my game, players can choose between three categories of armor. All units in the game have some - but those heavier are "delayed" in their combat rounds.

Not only that, every weapon has certain Penetration value - if it is higher than Armor of the target, shot continues on its merry journey, probably hitting another target or maybe just a wall, potentially breaching the space infrastructure (no rules yet about reactor meltdowns!)

The principle of the project is to leave the player with a considerable freedom - in choosing equipment, points of entry, even ways of entry (smashing through walls is possible) - with a hint of turn limit pressure and also too big collateral damage marking the defeat.

Ultimately, the viewer is going to be a judge if I manage successfully all that. Information about the game, links to pdf files and TTS module are available here:

Any feedback is an actionable feedback, so thank You in advance!

Here's an #introduction to this account

I'm @nauss and this is the account where, I guess, I'll talk about - and maybe post pictures related to - my board game habits

Some games to which I more or less know the rules at this point, in no particular order: #TwilightStruggle, the shorter #TSRedSea, #ImperialStruggle, the excellent #BayonetsAndTomahawks produced by talented locals, #HereIStand, #VirginQueen, #PaxRenaissance, #PaxPamir, #Arcs, maybe #JohnCompany but I'm not certain, and at least the Breaking the Bismarck Barrier scenario of #EmpireOfTheSun (finally, a game with real hexes). I have played several COIN games but the one I like the most is #AndeanAbyss. I love #DominantSpecies. I'm starting to love #Nevsky

Definitely not a tabletop board game but I'm also a big fan of #CivilizationVI, e.g. #Civ6. More hexes!

Interested in playing more games with locals, connecting with other people in town, or playing with other places' locals when I'm out of town. Looking at you, Ontario

I don't use Facebook, Discord, or almost any spyware social media if I can help it - and I only use BoardgameGeek begrudgingly. Happy to be on wargamers.social now, I've been thinking about spinning up a more game-focused account for awhile but it's always been on the backburner 😀

@grayson @FredKiesche My wife has said this: "You don't need all those games". She is right - I don't. Some time ago, two years or so, I have decided to concentrate myself on a single particular period in history. GMT Games does not publish that many games on that period - and the games that are in their preorder system can exist there for several years. For one title, I think, I have waited for around four years now. Maybe I am outside of the mainstream names and games?

So, even with the most recent update - the company does not provide me with any difficult choices - their preferred designers simply do not design the games about my selected period. I am "safe", I have no need to use a bunker myself.

GMT Games nowadays have so many projects in the making that they can seemingly carry on with what they are doing now - relying on recognized names that attract the customers.

Popular designers craft new titles and before the first game in the new series is even published, the second one in those series is being officially announced within the preorder system.

My son asked me recently to introduce him to the SPQR - line of Games.

I own SPQR 5th Ed., Julius Caesar, Hoplite, GB of Alexander, Cataphract.

Any suggestions with which game to start? I warned him that the Games are not balanced (those who have played them know what I mean).

Don't know why he is asking those questions when he plans to move out. 🤔

Thanks in advance.

@Alphawolf One can start with small scenarios. One can start with period that is of the most interest to Your son. In my time with wargames, my own interest was usually the best guidance even with more demanding wargame systems.

My ranking, in terms of accessibility, for the games that You have listed:
1) Hoplite / Cataphract
2) GB of Alexander
3) SPQR
4) Julius Caesar

In each game, there are smaller scenarios and those may be better for the newcomer to GBoH. However, Hoplite in this list is an odd one, as it has a different Activation system.

Hoplite and Cataphract, however, has scenarios that may end up pretty quickly, sometimes even in one or two turns, especially if both players will go for frontal attacks.

SPQR has maybe the biggest "footprint", by which I mean it is very easy to sit down to a really big scenario for some famous battle... but it also has several small scenarios that give the taste of the volume without demanding much time.

I am wary of "Roman" games for the beginners, because their Roman command system rewards playing well - and this means that it is easier to fumble around if one is new. ... On the other hand, I have been using C3i scenarios like Elis and Lamia to do precisely that - introduce the newcomers to Roman command system in smaller battles.

I hope that this helps. I sincerely hope that Your son will find the experience with the game enjoyable - ultimately, that is the most important thing, I think.

@Pete So it's a bit better than using software to read me a pdf with a rulebook aloud?
