My son asked me recently to introduce him to the SPQR - line of Games.

I own SPQR 5th Ed., Julius Caesar, Hoplite, GB of Alexander, Cataphract.

Any suggestions with which game to start? I warned him that the Games are not balanced (those who have played them know what I mean).

Don't know why he is asking those questions when he plans to move out. 🤔

Thanks in advance.

LuxConquest Summary: Well, what about this Con?

Pro:
Great Hotel, enough space for us, enough tables

Great organisation from the guys (you could tell them in advance when you want to play and which game, how many tables you need - and it was done). They even took care that 'no one was left behind'.

Mineral water and juice for free (and boy, it was hot in Luxemburg).

If you stayed in the Hotel, rooms were comfy, breakfast was excellent (lots of coffee, good food).

The crowd (as far as I could see) was super friendly and relaxed.

Every attendee of the Con got a Game. They had a lottery with Games from Vuca and Games from the collection of Andreas Gebhardt, who passed away in 2024. You might know him thru his work on Vassal mods for OSG Games. A bitter reminiscence and a nice gift from his family / friends.
When my name was drawn I picked the one game that had catched my eye instantly when I saw the stack of Games: SPI Spitfire.

Can't thank Cpt. Klod and Yves (Red Strike) Rettel enough for all the work, time and investment (and risk) they did. Also thanks for the sponsors UGG Game Design and Vuca.

Con-Shirt and Cap (see below) 👍😁

The Bad:

It was really hot in Luxemburg 🫠

See you next year (hopefully)

LuxConquest, Day 2: The other Side of the Hill, competitive, Armageddon scenario (the whole War)

That was really a brick to digest. It is definitely not an easy Game. Lot of things going in, the Rules could be a bit more organized and clear, will expand the player sheets with my own notes. If your new to the Game I would suggest trying it solo before taking it to a Con

or

have the great luck I had to play with my buddy and 2 complete strangers (one I had met the day before) who were really willing to 'take a bite', dig into the Game and want to make it work. Awesome, really fine guys.

Con ended at 6 pm (due to the request of the Hotel - we would have played longer). Most people left.

We (my buddy and me) asked the Hotel Management if we could sit sonewhere to play another Game (Gest of Robin Hood) and they allowed us to use the Library 'as long as you like'.

Well it was good - since I forgot to take photos from the second day.

Greetings from LuxConquest, a Wargaming Con hostet in Mondorf, Luxemburg.

Beside the heat we're having a great time here. Our Game for today was this one:

Road to Gettysburgh, GCACW.

Very nice people, great place. This Con is the first one with hopefully more to come in the following years.

Game for tomorrow: The other side of the Hill.

Then Years End Turn came up. Time to get new Chiefs and Foreign Troops for the other side.

And sadly the situation got a bit out of hand. Had to keep troops in the country to avoid 'fallen' condition. But my troops need time to get fresh replacements.

And there is something brewing in the South.

Turn 1 to 4 helped me to not get the situation out of hand (except around Kunduz and Panjshir Valley).

Save: Afghanistan, Comrade.

Playing this excellent game from Fortress Games. Solo Game. In this game you play as the Soviets to save Afghanistan from the usurpers.

Here is the setup and an example what happens when you roll high on the Chiefs table. Regional Leaders are poppin' up like crazy.

I have a Kindle that I bought because I want to read all the good old Fantasy, SciFi and Horror stuff from my youth.

So it includes Lovecraft, Howard and Kurtz next to the Malazan Cycle, Tchaikovsky's Shadows of the Apt Cycle as Asimov, Sanderson, Feist, Farmer. You get it.

Recently I discovered thru Etsy a guy producing Covers for the Kindle and these are in the 50s SF - Style. Instantly got one and I really like it.

So I'm sharing my joy here with you

Got my new playmat for my gaming table. It is called Red Nebula. Took the foto in the evening when the light was dim.

Really love the table. I have my Games Set up in the 'cellar ' and my son is doing his weekly WH40k Battle on Sunday at the top.

Finished my building - project:

Took an extra week since I needed 6 guys to flip the table. It is build upside down and you have to set it up on 4 chairs (or similar), then fix the legs and flip it 180 degrees.

If you've done this it is heavy, really heavy.

The cellar hold 4 maps 2 by 2 (34 x 22) or 3 maps (22 x 34). Fits 90 % of my Games.
