Yuguang Ke et al. assessed the effects of the ratio of inorganic nitrogen to organic nitrogen on the temporal stability of plant community productivity in a temperate meadow #Grassland.

📖 Different inorganic to organic nitrogen ratios (IN:ON) ➡️ Ecosystem stability 🟰 Effects❓

Results:
1️⃣ IN:ON ratio showed no significant effect on community stability.
2️⃣ IN decreased species richness more than ON.

Here's an #introduction to this account

I'm @nauss and this is the account where, I guess, I'll talk about - and maybe post pictures related to - my board game habits

Some games to which I more or less know the rules at this point, in no particular order: #TwilightStruggle, the shorter #TSRedSea, #ImperialStruggle, the excellent #BayonetsAndTomahawks produced by talented locals, #HereIStand, #VirginQueen, #PaxRenaissance, #PaxPamir, #Arcs, maybe #JohnCompany but I'm not certain, and at least the Breaking the Bismarck Barrier scenario of #EmpireOfTheSun (finally, a game with real hexes). I have played several COIN games but the one I like the most is #AndeanAbyss. I love #DominantSpecies. I'm starting to love #Nevsky

Definitely not a tabletop board game but I'm also a big fan of #CivilizationVI, e.g. #Civ6. More hexes!

Interested in playing more games with locals, connecting with other people in town, or playing with other places' locals when I'm out of town. Looking at you, Ontario

I don't use Facebook, Discord, or almost any spyware social media if I can help it - and I only use BoardgameGeek begrudgingly. Happy to be on wargamers.social now, I've been thinking about spinning up a more game-focused account for awhile but it's always been on the backburner 😀

„Dominant Species: Marine“ steigt weiter in meiner Gunst 🐙🌊 – die Partien sind wechselvoll, überraschend und häufig spannend bis zur letzten Runde.

Gestern habe ich das dritte Spiel in Folge gewonnen 🏆 – gegen ein wirklich starkes Feld.
Schaffe ich morgen das Quadrupel? 🎲💪

Ge Hou et al. found that the #DominantSpecies predominated #CommunityStability by promoting the community #DominantSpeciesStability (DSS) and #SpeciesAsynchrony in the #AlpineGrasslands on the northern #TibetanPlateau. Mean-while, community species dominance contributed to the DSS. Protecting locally dominant species can stabilize the ecosystem functions of alpine grasslands.

◀️ I've always been (at least partially) a downright sinister person. Well, not in the modern sense (I hope), but in a much, much older one.

◀️ In everyday usage "sinister" means "that arouses feelings of fear, of horror", "suggesting or threatening harm or evil", "dangerous, lugubrious, criminal", and the first time this word appeared with a similar meaning ("false, dishonest, with ill will") was in the 15th century, in France, being taken from Old French from the 14th century ("contrary, false, unfavorable, on the left side").

💬 "PAROLLES. ... you shall find in the regiment of the Spinii one Captain Spurio, with his cicatrice, an emblem of war, here on his sinister cheek; it was this very sword entrench'd it." — William Shakespeare, All’s Well That Ends Well [Act II, Scene I] (1623) 💬

◀️ In the end, it all comes from the Latin word, also called "sinister", which means "left" or "on the left side". How did an adjective that meant "left" come to signify "evil, criminal, dangerous"? According to the Merriam Webster website, most likely the modern meaning evolved due to the predominantly right-handed population (about 10% of the population is left-handed) and probably due to the clumsiness that people have when making movements with the left side of the body.

◀️ Now, the Celts of Antiquity did not see the left as something diabolical, associating the left side with femininity and the fertile womb. But once Christianity gained momentum in Europe, the idea that "left = immorality" was also fixed.

📸 Photo: I reveal my "sinister" self in a session of Dominant Species, a board game whose action takes place at the beginning of the last ice age (in 90,000 BC). Each player represents a "genus" of animal (insects, arachnids, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals) and tries to dominate various "ecological niches", adapting to various types of food. It is a eurogame-wargame-abstract, whose theme, however, is felt in all components and all game mechanics. It is a complex, strategic and extraordinary game.

My #BoardGames plays for August. I got a 5P #Concordia game in early (taught a couple of people) and then traveled with friends and taught #JustOne, #NoThanks! and #Hive to a few people. I had a bout of covid so no plays for a couple of weeks and then learned old games #DominantSpecies and #Caylus both of which are really good and I hope to playa again. (via #BGStats)
