When I was a kid, I attended a county park district program, and met Tom Kashmer, a retired teacher who banded birds. He showed me how cool birds were, later I learned he lived near me and he started to pick me up to go band birds with him.
I spent many mornings (as a lucky home schooled kid with flexible school hours) driving around banding birds, learning about wetlands and the world.
Tom changed my life, and introduced me to rails, the birds I still study today
he died Monday
