@rsavir This is a really good article, including interviews with experts in the field, explaining why the idea that masking/shielding has 'weakened' our immune systems is a fundamental misunderstanding of how our immune systems work. https://globalnews.ca/news/9272293/immunity-debt-covid-19-misinformation/
‘Immunity debt’: Why experts say this new term promotes COVID-19 ‘misinformation’

The term "immunity debt" is circulating as an explanation of a surge in illness in Canada, but infectious diseases experts say it's “dangerous” and promotes COVID “misinformation.”

@rsavir Unlikely, Sweden is experiencing a similar thing in terms of sickness and severity, particularly amongst kids, and they had neither lockdowns nor mask mandates. There seems to be increasing evidence that covid causes lasting damage to the body even if had mildly, including to the immune system, which is making regular seasonal illnesses much more severe.
@CorneliusHecker DO IT, but be warned. The app is one of the single most addicting apps I've ever been on. I get stuck in a scroll and the next thing I know, a whole day has passed.
@Pxrpleberry @actuallyautistic Hey 👋 I want to create a list of groups ppl can join for the #AutisticCommunity to help us find a sense of belonging 💗
I run an international Zoom #BookClub which you would be welcome to join; we use the ‘Book Club’ part as the social scaffolding and it gives us a point of connection but we spend 90% of the time talking about Autism ao it doesn’t matter if you’ve read the book or not!
It’s free and everyone is #ActuallyAutistic incl. me!
Okay, so, whilst I'm still figuring all this out, if I do something incorrectly with tagging or trigger warning, please let me know (as it is different from other platforms, not just functionally, but culture-wise, too).
@AspenPWD I think, for me, the main reason why it's important to include mental illnesses and other things (brain injuries, alzheimers, etc.) as neurodivergence is because neurodiversity is primarily a political/social framework, and should include all people who experience marginalisation as a result of the way their brain works...and it should be about fighting for respect, equity and justice for all brain types, even those that may also need/warrant treatments or cures.

I've been off work sick for almost a week. Not with covid. Not with the flu. But with a cold.

I've never experienced a cold this badly before - I've always been terrible at being ill, but could generally work through a cold (working from home, that is).

But this? I've been in bed for nearly a week.

The difference between now, and before, is that I had #covid a few months ago.

Mask, everyone. Be careful. Please. My immune system is utterly, utterly fucked. Don't do this to yourself.

@thequirkybraincoach I've absolutely experienced this: where I've been so focused on something, getting through it, masking, holding it together, and then the moment that the stress goes away, or I don't need to mask anymore, not only do I fall apart, but I almost ALWAYS get sick. It's like my body goes FINALLY and let's everything go, including my immune system.

I'm not aware of scientific work on this but it's my own experience that too much #masking and working too hard makes me vulnerable to infections.

I had a cold and had two important work deliverables to do. I was the only person who could do them, and I didn't want to disappoint. I also only thought I had a cold. I tested negative for COVID loads of days in a row, too...and thought I was feeling a little better.

However, I had to mask a lot and really force myself to work hard and concentrate - under deadlines too.

As soon as I began to relax for the first time in over a week yesterday: a huge fever developed.

I'm not after any sympathy. I'm cuddling my animals, who maintain a constant vigil.

I am curious to know how common this experience is for anyone masking #neurodivergent conditions, however. I'd also love to know if there is any scientific literature on this phenomenon for a range of brains.

Does this happen to you and why do you think it happens?

I'm a reference check (the reference being my employer, so that should be safe) and a credit check (which SHOULD be okay, but I've never had to have one before, so of course I'm panicking) away from moving out of the family home and into my first ever flat in the new year 😱 😭
