This right here is the only reason I still keep a Facebook account. There are some closed more specialized networks that use other platforms, but for the general goings-on of the Deaf community, Facebook is it.

Finally getting around to an #intro post. I'm a first gen US born Portuguese (#Azores) binational, with Brazilian husband (Portuguese language FTW). Queer (he/they) #Leftist from the #SFBayArea.

Using a late-in-life CS degree to work as a (hearing) #SignLanguage #Interpreter specialized in #Tech interpreting. Former interpreter coordinator for #DeafCon.

I pretend to understand academic #Linguistics research, #Conlang enthusiast, and former #Handbell ringer. Have dabbled in the #FiberArts and enjoy games of the #VideoGames and #BoardGames variety.

Hashtag dump: #ASL, #DeafCon, #Defcon, #Terp, #Crochet, #Handbells, #TechTerp, #Deaf, #ASLInterpreter, #SignLanguageInterpreter

Let me know if you need help finding tech interpreters. I would love a more organized way of finding interpreters comfortable interpreting tech conferences

Caveat: not Deaf, hearing ASL interpreter perspective.

This is accessibility theater and not actually useful beyond making the hearing non-signers go "Ooo, how cool!"

First off, this is BSL not ASL, making this inaccessible to anyone outside of a BANZSL signing country.

Second, pretty sure this is only used for one song of their whole set, so accessibility is not the goal.

Third, Signed Languages require a full view of the face as it carries a large amount of grammatical information.

@JordiGH
This practice is usually called "sim-com" (simultaneous communication). It is frowned upon by some because it requires you to compromise the grammar of ASL to produce passable sounding English.

This means although a hearing person may understand what a sim-coming person is saying, Deaf ASL speakers may have a harder time parsing the signing produced by the same person.

@izzyamar

Fox Sports had a separate ASL YouTube link for those that wanted ASL access to the pre game show and halftime show. Still not done as well as some European countries' SL access, but a step closer.

Why do you mention that the event is internationally broadcast?

Stephen Torrence made a formal apology for the "ASL" videos he made. Worth a read:

The hands down best online curriculum to learn ASL can be located here:
https://www.lifeprint.com/

Don't let the horrible web design fool you, this is better than any paid app or website and learning from a Deaf instructor is a must

@MarcSchulder

Was about to link this exact article! I work as a sign language interpreter, and "Sign Language" glove articles distract from the Deaf community's constant fight for accessibility
