Hi all! I’m a PhD candidate at UWTSD in Wales. Working for SWARCH in Devon. I’m interested in all the wonderful archaeology of the world but a special place in my heart for the Eastern Mediterranean and Near East. Thesis is on the Ivory of the Iron Age destruction levels of Hasanlu in Iran.

Academics date ‘rapid’ decline of giant ice sheet that once covered Wales

An ancient ice sheet once covering Wales and Ireland disappeared more rapidly than previously thought, experts at a Welsh university have discovered. Published in the journal ‘Boreas’, the research by Aberystwyth University studied the last British-Irish ice sheet, which contained enough ice to raise global sea-levels by almost two metres when it melted.  The researchers […]

Tiye was #Tutankhamun's grandmother and The Great Royal Wife of Amenhotep III. Her #mummy was found in pharaoh's tomb and a #DNA test confirmed The Elder Lady's identity. Her bust, now in Berlin, is one of the finest artworks in #Egypt. #TutVember #Tutankhamun100 #archaeology

Hi everyone, this is my second #introduction as I just migrated from mastodon.social to aus.social.

I’m a #CulturalStudies researcher specialising in #Eurovision, #PopCulture, and #SoftPower, teaching in #InternationalRelations - #migration #envhum

So I post about those things, #academia, and general nonsense that I try to pass off as hot takes, plus #cats.

Ancient Egyptian amulet of Thoth in his form of a seated baboon. His headdress is a full moon sitting atop a crescent moon, reflecting his role as a lunar deity. His name is inscribed on his chest.

He stands at just 5.5 cm tall and is in the collection at Manchester Museum.

I photographed him using a macro lens and this photo is part of my Shadow series within my #TinyEgypt photography project.

First day in the library in London is over.

My academic research focuses on archaeological theory (especially theories of "#place" as developed within humanistic geography in overlap with process philosophy), antiquarianism, #borderlands (different from #frontiers) of the #RomanEmpire, #SQL and data modeling in archaeology, and the dynamics of cultural and religious change in the first millennium AD/CE.

For 6 years (2010-16) I was Chair of the Theoretical Roman Archaeology Conference (#TRAC) Standing Committee.

Today started to draft an article on the so-called Crypta Romana, a Roman-period tunnel that crosses the acropolis of the ancient city of Cumae. Focusing just on the easternmost 50 m for now, I think I can show, on the basis of toolmarks, two teams of stonecutters working towards each other and meeting in the middle. The team working from the east seems to have done so in sections of 10 Roman feet, unsurprising if, as is very likely, it was a military undertaking.
Akhenaten was Tutankhamun's father. He was known until his fifth year of reign as Amenhotep IV. He created a monoteistic state that worshipped the sun, Aten. He moved the capital to a new town Akhetaten, modern Tell el-Amarna. #TutVember #Tutankhamun100 #archaeology
