80 years ago today, Willem Arondeus was executed by Nazis after he bravely bombed a building to destroy 800,000 identity cards.

He was an openly-gay Dutch artist who forged documents for Jewish people.

His last words were "Tell people that homosexuals are not cowards."

@BigAngBlack @[email protected] @BlackMastodon I have a 10'x3' little urban patch in the front. Some of the soil was contaminated by an old oil tank. So, my azalea bush couldn't survive. But others things do, have some hostas, butterfly bushes that look like firecrackers when they bloom (hyssop)(late summer). Grow lavender, mint and pieris japonica in pots. Annuals: Begonias, sweet alyssum and portulaca (open in day bright flowers, closed at night). gardening is great stress relief.

This piece from composer and drummer Nate Smith might make you want to dance. I hadn't heard this rhythm pattern before and found it very fun. It sounds like syncopating in 4/4 but when you get to the 8th beat you say "8 & &." It also sounds like alternation between a bar 14/8 time then a bar of 3/8.

Happy Birthday Bessie!

Bessie Coleman (January 26, 1892 – April 30, 1926)was an early American civil aviator. She was the first African-American woman and first Native American to hold a pilot license.

Too many people still don't know Cop City— an attempt to cut down an Atlanta greenspace and neighbourhood food forest to build a COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY urban warfare training facility— is happening, let alone that APD has tear-gassed and even killed people protesting against them.

They claim that the protestor they killed shot at them first, but somehow, miraculously, only have video of the after-action, not the incident itself.

Y'know, back in 2014 many of us believed the proliferation of body cameras for cops would mean real oversight and accountability. Within months it became clear that the cameras would mean nothing, and not JUST because the cops themselves would oversee the footage rather than a 3rd party.

No, we realised then, and have had it proven time and time again, that bodycams don't mean shit for accountability, because no matter how much police negligence and malfeasance the videos show, LARGE SWATHES of the public and the media will go out of their way to excuse COPS' behaviour, and blame the victims for their own deaths. Especially if those victims aren't white.

Anyway. Check the tag #StopCopCity on some other platforms.

Chris Thile and Brad Meldhau join forces on their eponymous album, and I really love their work on “Daughter of Eve.” This track combines folk song storytelling with labyrinthine piano and mandolin improvisation under jazz influence.

From James Francies we get a rich, laid-back piano groove balanced by countermelody from (distant synth) vocals. A melodic call-and-response of sorts which establishes an idea and steadily develops it.

Hey, y'all who play #mandolin, especially #classicalmandolin (or analogously #classicalguitar #guitar), how do I interpret the slurs over the top?

This is Etude No. 1 from an old #French mandolin primer from ~1907 with 25 etudes in it. I am an amateur and this is andante, so my notes are decaying before I can link them together legato-like. Are these just phrase markers? Etude 2 has a note expressly instructing the student to use tremolo so I think tremolo is not in Etude 1.
