Mattel still sells the #BessieColeman #Barbie. She has a fascinating story that precedes the Amelia Earhart era by about a decade. Unable to find a flight school in the US that would teach a woman of color, she moved to France to learn to fly a plane.

Returning to the US, she joined the barnstorming community in her Nieuport, performing only for integrated audiences, and refusing to perform in shows that discriminated against people of color.

She was tragically killed in a freak accident while surveying an area for a parachute jump the next day.

@benetnasch I was SO MAD when I learned about her. My daughter did a 3rd grade Black History Month project and one of her classmates had #BessieColeman. I was amazed! But also mad that I was learning about her for the first time at the age of 43! Amazing, amazing life, and buried from our education for far too long! But, the bright side, at least my daughter and her friends were learning about her.

Happy Birthday Bessie!

@SharonGibson3 #BessieColeman is so badass, her story so incredible. But her story is also a reminder to me that we weren't properly taught #history. I didn't learn about her until I was in my 40's when my daughter did a school project on her.
At least they are doing it better nowadays, but I can't imagine many teachers putting their necks on the line here in FL as we become more fascist and let bad legislation rake over our schools.
