I was a bit slow on this one, but I finally disabled Google Maps on my phone! I've been using Organic Maps (https://organicmaps.app/) for a little while now and I've had a great experience. I just have two issues:

1) Unless I download Organic Maps from the Google Play Store, I can't use it with Android Auto when I'm in a car. I want to disconnect from Google, so this is not ideal.
2) It seems like @organicmaps is the official Mastodon account, but they don't have their website verified.

It only took a few minutes to copy the places I had saved on Google Maps into a note in #Fossify Notes (https://www.fossify.org/). As usual, I'm finding that plain text notes are exactly what I need and give me a better experience than these bloated corporate apps.

The National Science Foundation fired nearly 170 workers this morning in Zoom call. This included workers who had already cleared their one-year probationary period only to have it changed to two years earlier this month, putting them in line for termination. It also included at-will permanent workers -- the latter were not among those designated for firing by the Trump administration; instead NSF decided on its own to eliminate them. Here's my story:

Firings at the NSF included permanent employees who had already completed their one-year probationary period, as well as at-will workers.

...as with the last historic cold outbreak the Euro predicted, it has modified, with ast night's run -53 F anomaly with -24 F in that area.

Still extreme with anomalies of -40 in almost every state in the east, but not likely state-record-breaking. We'll see if today's run moderates the outbreak even more.

The Euro has backed off a little on its historic cold outbreak week after next. Yesterday, it was showing an incredible -64 F degree temp anomaly in KS/MO at one point, literally off the charts. That would be a low of -34 F, close to the state records of -40. However... (1/2)

#ClimateChange added 41 days of dangerous heat around world in 2024

#ExtremeWeather will continue to become more frequent, intense, destructive, costly, and deadly, until we can lower the concentration of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere.
Significantly more #climate extremes could be expected without action, the UN environment Program said in the fall, as more planet-warming #CarbonDioxide has been sent into the air this year by burning #FossilFuels than last year.

#ESA and #NASA satellites deliver first joint picture of #Greenland Ice Sheet melting

#GlobalWarming is causing the Ice Sheet to melt and flow more rapidly, raising sea levels and disturbing weather patterns across our planet. Precise measurements of its changing shape are of critical importance.
Scientists have now delivered the first measurements of Greenland Ice Sheet thickness change using #CryoSat2 and #ICESat2

Went down a rabbit hole looking for antipodes earlier. Lower 48 US states are all in the ocean, but Hawaii was pretty interesting! 🌍 https://www.geodatos.net/en/antipodes
