🚨 #UN Experts are sounding the alarm - and the African Development Bank must listen ‼️ UN Experts issued a joint statement decrying the AfDB's decision to approve a $150 million loan for the Coral North Floating LNG Project in #Mozambique's Cabo Delgado province. Their words are unambiguous: "Continuing to approve new upstream fossil fuel projects risks locking in high emissions infrastructure that is incompatible with the 1.5°C temperature limit and undermines the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment." Let that sink in. A leading multilateral development bank -one with its own Climate Change and Green Growth Strategy- is financing new #FossilFuel development at the very moment the world is breaching critical climate thresholds. The climate and human rights stakes here are concrete: 🔴 The project will increase greenhouse gas emissions, incl methane -one of the most potent short-term drivers of global warming 🔴 It will worsen air pollution across a region already suffering severe and repeated #ClimateCrisis shocks 🔴 It locks in high-carbon infrastructure for decades, making the 1.5°C legally binding limit harder, possibly impossible, to meet 🔴 It diverts scarce public finance away from the renewable energy transition that Mozambique and the region urgently need And this is not happening in a vacuum. Cabo Delgado is already one of the most climate-vulnerable regions, battered by cyclones, displacement, and conflict. Previous LNG projects have failed local communities through inadequate consultation, loss of livelihoods, and broken promises of jobs that never materialised. The UN experts note this decision contradicts the AfDB's own climate strategy, the ⚖️ #ICJ Advisory Opinion on climate obligations, and international #HumanRights law. Under the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, financial institutions have a duty to prevent and remedy harm, not fund it.
