There's no free lunch, and unfortunately many of these startups don't start with a clear path towards break-even until either an IPO or an acquisition, thus killing all of the early appeal of said service.

Very glad @Gargron and the @Mastodon team decided to be the adults in the room on this one.

Being a #nimby about #ActivityPub doesn't help #mastodon 's cause... or anyone's cause really. Threads seems rather unimpressive overall but folding Meta's millions of users into ActivityPub is a good thing for the future of the social web. The media and #Meta itself including mentions of Mastodon when discussing #Threads eventual adoption of AP will also lend this platform a boost in engagement broadly.
