@[email protected] I actually had a long conversation about this with my managing editor Basically we both came the conclusion that LLMs trained on domain-specific datasets would be invaluable organizational toolkits for reporters and writers that'd otherwise need to sort through a cacophony of sources and tips to compile a story or break down reports/press releases. It'd also be nice for photojournalists to have something that auto-generates alt-text for their immense body of work.

The North Slope of Alaska is one of the fastest-warming regions in the world because of human-caused climate change. Since 1971, Utqiaġvik has warmed a staggering 6 degrees, in large part because of the loss of sea ice. #Alaska #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateEmergency #ecosystem #arctic #collapse https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2023/07/28/alaska-heat-utqiagvik-fairbanks-climate/
Even Alaska is facing exceptional heat, with highs topping 90 degrees

One of the nation’s fastest-warning places is Alaska’s North Slope

@caseynewton Meanwhile here in the US judges get angy if you even try to give platforms COVID advice as a White House official

The US and EU are on opposite ends of a caltrop on this issue.

My latest story for WIRED: Meet the U.S. Navy task force using AI to police the pirate-infested waters of the Gulf of Oman. The increasingly capable autonomous systems being tested there offer a glimpse of how AI will transform warfare.

Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital tossed their credibility behind an acquisition that has decisively crashed in value

Despite their history of otherwise prudent risk-management, They decided to bankroll this buyout even when the writing was on the wall due to the primary buyer's increasingly erratic behavior

Billions in value disappeared almost overnight, and these two will probably regret it for years. Their reputation is now seriously suspect.

@devindra @thelinuxEXP Twitter's parallels to most PE buyouts aren't touched on as much as they should be imo

1. Wild, outsized initial influx of capital
2. Wiping the C-suite with big golden parachutes for the board
3. Taken private to avoid obvious scrutiny over shareholder value
4. Erratic shedding of staff and product teams
5. No product specialists being brought in to replace them
6. Bringing in third-party consultancy due to high voluntary turnover of talent
7. Shitty rebrand

I love how Elon Musk managed to Speedrun every other step of "private equity aquisition Hell" but saved the consultancy-driven rebrand for last... as a treat

@devindra Just imagine it's an EMP from an airburst nuclear warhead, it's like an Oppenheimer AR experience!
@caseynewton Small publications spamming the AP's bot would be the immediate effect 🤣
