Boy, 20 (yeeee) y.o.
I like to build and play around with computers and soldering stuff, though i'm still a novice in both.

Other than that i love older consoles and handhelds (i've got a PSP2 (Vita) and a DSi at the moment).

Also cooking, mostly (pancakes & waffles) sweets.

I'm from Moldova btw, so i may post in romanian, english and russian.

In February 2008, SanDisk announced SD cards with a built-in, fold-out USB connector, eliminating the need for a card reader. Did these ever reach the market? I've never seen one. https://www.theregister.com/Print/2008/02/01/sandisk_prices_32gb_sdhc/

After some drilling and bending i finally got my first inverted pc case)

It's based on a old Deepcool case

Gotta drill several 8 and 9mm holes to make all the things fit, then cover the bottom back.

But ill leave this for later

I got tired of trying to find inverted pc cases in our country. The only ones are from bequiet and they are either too big or too expensive (if not the size and stock problem id buy the black 802).

Just now i noticed that the front panel on my old deepcool matrix 55 is almost reversible (minus the middle pins), why not try and reverse it?)

Lots of people (even technical ones) seem to be confused how things like ASUS Armory Crate and the like can just "run" in Windows after boot, without any user interaction, on a clean install.

So I figured I'd give a brief explanation:
Your BIOS/UEFI provides this thing called ACPI tables. These tables contain a lot of information the OS needs, such as how to talk to certain hardware, and even routines for things like sending the "power off" signal after shutdown.

There is an ACPI table called WPBT (Windows Platform Binary Table). On boot, Windows will read this table, if present, and literally just run the contents of the entry as a binary (after verifying its Authenticode signature). Yep, that's it, you just have an exe file in your UEFI that Windows is configured to run. Unless you set a registry entry to turn this off.

Here's the official docs for the detail hungry folk: https://download.microsoft.com/download/8/a/2/8a2fb72d-9b96-4e2d-a559-4a27cf905a80/windows-platform-binary-table.docx

@vwestlife I've seen some cards like this before, but I don't recall if they were SanDisk branded.

@artemist @vwestlife
There was a limited-edition high-performance all-red range, co-branded Ferrari or Porsche, but still manufactured by SanDisk. They were horribly expensive, but they may have been tested or certified to work (and not die) inside cars at extreme temperatures.

I can't find anything online about them now, which is a pity.

They also had non-folding SanDisk Extreme cards in all-red.

@vwestlife Can confirm, I had owned one, used to use it in my iMate Jam phone if I remember correctly. I'm in Europe, Scotland specifically.

@kDelta Thanks. So they do exist, but so far I've only seen them in 512 MB and 1 GB capacities. This listing has better photos showing how the fold-out USB connector works: https://www.ebay.com/itm/116640020793

@vwestlife I can't remember the capacity of mine but I doubt it was 8GB, in fact I imagine by 2008 I had already bounced my unreliable iMate Jam off the pavement and left it there (true story, only went back for my SIM and SD card 😅) so was it possibly available earlier at the smaller sizes? Or did I actually have this later for another purpose? My memory is not what it used to be since neurosurgery 🤭
@vwestlife Yep, this looks more like the time and capacity of the one I had. 2005 for the 1GB model https://newatlas.com/go/3742/
SD Memory Card With Built-In USB Connectivity

February 21, 2005 – SanDisk has introduced the SanDisk Ultra II SD PLUS, an innovative SD flash memory card with built-in USB connectivity. The new card, which works seamlessly in any SD card slot, also can be used as a high-speed USB 2.0 flash drive. The card plugs into any USB port offering the…

@kDelta @vwestlife
I have 2 each of the following sizes: 1GB / 2GB / 4GB (with a status LED and write-protect switch on each one).
I forget which ones had which colour of LED but it was different for some different capacities.

Bought them all at retail, using my tried and trusted "not the biggest size on the shelf, but maybe the second biggest" method of getting decent value for money.

I used them mainly in a Canon PowerShot compact. With the latest CHDK firmware files installed.

@vwestlife @kDelta Crazy to see an Sandisk SD card branded "Ultra" with 512 MBs of capacity. Flash memory has become so affordable.
@kDelta 30 Quids fo1 1 GB, inflation is crazy these days
@vwestlife wow i just want to play with that like it's a fidget toy until i snap it in half
@vwestlife I don't know if that exact model did but the Action Replay Wii of all things did something similar
@Rib @vwestlife whoa what? i had an action replay SD card for the wii, but i didn't have one that looked like this

dman that's kinda cool lol
@Rib @vwestlife wrt what vwestlife said, i swear i've seen a video where someone demonstrated an SD card like that... i think it was a licensed card funnily enough, by some car brand (i think ferrari?)
@vwestlife so this is a microSD in SD form factor with a built in USB? yeah, they should bring those back. but like with the option of removing the microSD too. Then I'm sold.

@necrophcodr @vwestlife

A couple of those in 256M+ range would solve some issues for me

@necrophcodr @vwestlife
No.
They first came out before microSD.

They were based on another card that was an existing standard size, but I forget which one. It left just enough room for the USB connector part and a dummy foldaway wraparound to bring the total footprint up to full SD card size.
The USB wraparound was nicely hinged, and I never got any of mine even close to failure.
I did manage to find one device whose SD slot wasn't entirely happy with the hinged part.

@vwestlife I've seen *of* them, like folks using them, but I've not seen one in person.
@vwestlife I wanted them. Never saw them.
@vwestlife @root42 Oh, wow. I never heard of them.
@vwestlife I still have mine, still working! Bought it new because young me thought it was the coolest thing ever.
@vwestlife I totally had one! I used it in my Palm Treo, so probably before 2008 and in lower capacity, maybe 512 MB? But it was awesome! I could download a file over cellular and then pop the card into any machine with USB. Like living in the future.
@vwestlife I had several of these. I used them with my Palm TX for media storage and transfer. I liked them though the hinges were a bit fragile.
@pngwen @vwestlife
I must have been lucky with mine. Regularly in and out of the same compact digital camera, fold away for USB transfers, fold back for storage, and no hinge trouble ever.
@dec23k @vwestlife Could be, or maybe I was just too rough with mine :) They still worked if they lost the back flap, they were just a little harder to eject.

@pngwen @vwestlife
I did manage to find one device where the eject mechanism in the SD slot wasn't happy with the hinged part of the card. I ejected it carefully and didn't use them in that device again.

The latch for the card (in most slots) engaged with the SD half of the card and ignored the hinge and the foldaway section.

@vwestlife I have a 2gig card and use it for data transfer between my computer (USB) and my Prusa 3D printer next room (Sd-Card). I wanted to buy a new one, but couldn't find

@vwestlife
While searching El Reg's website for the sports car co-branded SanDisk cards, I found a story about a sideways approach with an off-centre USB connector:

Keian made one that "replaces past SD/USB cards' complicated folding panels with a simple removable wedge."

@vwestlife @uliwitness I had a couple of these for my Nikon D80, meant I didn’t have to carry a card reader to grab pics onto laptop. Worked well enough and from memory wasn’t outrageously expensive
