Violence in the U.S. Congress
On May 22, 1856, Senator Charles Sumner, an abolitionist from Massachusetts, was giving a fiery speech on the floor of the Senate. Preston Brooks, a pro-slavery Congressman from South Carolina, was so enraged by the speech that he beat Sumner viciously with a cane, nearly killing him. (1/5)
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear won a second term Tuesday by a comfortable margin, as the incumbent Democrat defeated Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron by roughly five percentage points and 67,174 votes.
The Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin just said (on Threads) that last night's results show that 90% of political reporting is garbage.
That's because 90% of "coverage" is speculation and opinion. An email from the NYT "The Tilt" assured me that it was a good night for Democrats but that doesn't mean anything for 2024.
Rubbish.
Elections tell us how voters feel. Polls do not and pundits do not.
Don't be fooled by the Republicans' intra-party "fighting" over the government shutdown. They're essentially all in on this.
Their goal(s)? Occam's Razor says:
1) Trigger a recession that -- because Big Journalism will publish whatever the Republicans claim, however untrue -- will be blamed on Democrats since they hold the White House.
2) Panic the Democrats (again with journalism's help) to give into massive cuts in programs that, you know, help people.
