3 Oregon students file lawsuit to ban trans athletes from women’s sports

Legal challenges to trans athletes competing in womens sports have appeared in multiple states. Three Oregon students argue trans athletes are given special privileges, including having to hire security to escort them during track meets.

2. I'll still be here, because I love chatting with you. I just don't want to double post.

A point @peterpomerantsev.bsky.social makes in his book, How to Win an Information War, is that UK propagandist Sefton Delmer found success by attacking Hitler's AIDES (but not Hitler directly) for their corruption--and playing to the nasty instincts of Hitler's base.

Perseid, Aurora, and Noctilucent Clouds

Explanation:
Night skies over northern Sweden can hold some tantalizing sights in August. Gazing toward the Big Dipper, this beautiful skyscape captures three of them in a single frame taken last August 12/13. Though receding from northern skies for the season, night shining or noctilucent clouds are hanging just above the horizon. Extreme altitude icy condensations on meteoric dust, they were caught here just below an early apparition of a lovely green auroral band, also shining near the edge of space. The flash of a Perseid meteor near the peak of the annual shower punctuates the scene. In fact, this year's Perseid shower will peak in the coming days, offering a continuing chance for a night sky photographer's hat trick.

San Francisco Noir Alley Cats ~ watercolor

Artwork for #Fensterfreitag & #Caturday. My painting is inspired by a love of cats, rain, San Francisco and classic film. There's a nod to a favorite noir "Dark Passage" set in 1940's #SanFrancisco. A #window in the distance displays a little painting.

DHS Tells Police That Common Protest Activities Are ‘Violent Tactics’

DHS is urging law enforcement to treat even skateboarding and livestreaming as signs of violent intent during a protest, turning everyday behavior into a pretext for police action.

Any #Tattoo enthusiasts around?

I do not have any tattoos yet, I've never had anything that I wanted to commit to permanency on myself like that, but I do now, I've had an idea for several months and it's stayed put, I know for sure that I want it... I just don't know how I want it to look.

I want the quote from David Lynch (well, the paraphrased quote, anyway) of "Fix your heart or die"

Any thoughts about design for that?

One place to start would be an artist at the tattoo shop. Look at the shop’s gallery and ask to talk to the artists that speak to you. Visit several if you can.

Good luck!

Why do I refer to the bike as a "lamplighter"? In the old days lamp lighting was a job. A lamp lighter went around in the evening usually with a ladder and lit up each gas powered lamp post in turn.

Some of the people doing this job had specialist bikes made that were very tall. Then they could just cycle between each one, hold on (or lean) and light them without needing the ladder.

The design here is classic lamplighter bike style, albeit scaled down. A real lamplighter would be over 7 foot.

And now you learn that #TallBikesArePractical 🤪

And if you wonder why I called this the #PrincessLamplighter, it is because the donor bike was a Diamant (Diamond) Princess kids bike.

See the pictures in this thread:
https://mastodon.social/@objo/114794259863787108

Here is a picture of a bigger lamplighter bike if you are curious.

We did discuss @objo building a full scale lamplighter and I was very much up for riding around on that but my wife vetoed the idea so @objo made this "mini" one and surprised me with it.

I have to say though, that it is incredibly cute. 😍

@ruari I learned something today! Tall bikes cobbled together from multiple frames are not uncommon around here, but I always assumed they were just some wacky trend that got started for the fun of it. I never knew they had historical precedent.

Very ingenious, those lamplighters! Slightly safer than doing the same on a 6' unicycle.

@DaleTrexel They are mainly built for fun these days. However some people have interesting cargo bike designs with the storage below, so tha the size of the bike optimised for short length rather than height.

So yeah, #TallBikesArePractical even today 😉

@DaleTrexel Look at all the storage area available on one of @objo's other bikes! 💼🧳
@ruari Storage capacity yes, but center of balance with the rider up high and storage above the axles... still seems pretty dodgy to me!
@ruari How much taller is that than a penny farthing?
@Linnefaulk Not a lot. The seat on the penny comes up to my shoulder, this is above that but not as high as my head. However I am running the seat a bit low because the seat post is too short. 😆
@Linnefaulk Oh, you meant the real/classic one? A lot taller!!!
@Linnefaulk I've seen references to them being over 7ft, so yeah, really tall!
@ruari Falling off the bike is bad enough, but add 7’ to it? 🙂‍↔️
@Linnefaulk and at speed!
@Linnefaulk Here is a better reference for the size of this baby lamplighter, if you had not seen this image yet. I'm 6ft and remember, the seat is too low for me. 😉
@Linnefaulk Something about this being a mini/dwarf version of the bike and yet at the same time it almost being as tall as me amuses me greatly. 😁
@ruari ...how do you mount that?
@aburka You can mount like this. You can do the same in reverse to get off but I always just stand on one pedal then jump off the side, as it is quicker and easier.
@ruari "Är det safe?" "Nej!"
@meganL yeah I love that. The one asking if it is safe is a friend of mine! 🤣
@ruari I was paying so much attention to the mount that I didn't notice it was Swedish until later in the video!
@meganL it's in Norway but close enough. 😉
@ruari I *knew* I should have listened more before making a language ID with words the Scandinavian languages have in common.
@ruari ah I see it has a built-in ladder!
@aburka on the other two tallbikes I have ridden the pedal is just low enough that you can do it without the little step.
@ruari @aburka thank you for posting the video, I could not visualize how to mount this bike without this
@vxo No problem. It's the same on a penny farthing for what it's worth. I cycle a penny as well.
@ruari awww neat! I've seen people ride by on Pennys before, but I never observed how they got on and off.
@vxo it's basically identical.
@ruari @aburka I saw one of those at the Southampton Sky Ride years ago.
@tiredhorizon They are always fun to look at and ride.
@ruari Very cool. I would fall while mounting or 10 seconds later.

@ruari

I'm old enough to remember them.

Ours didn't have bicycles, they carried a ladder.

That's why they had cross bars, to lean the ladder on.

@EricLawton Indeed I think it is a tiny minority who used bikes, it was not the standard thing.
@EricLawton if it was me though, I'd definitely prefer a bike. I'm way too lazy to be carrying a ladder and constantly climbing up and down it. 🤣

@ruari

Our window cleaners had bicycles.

They rode them with their extention ladders on their shoulders, head between two middle rungs, a bucket hung on each end. How they didn't break their necks in falls, IDK.

They'd get one bucket filled with soapy water, one clean water, at a house in each row.

Clean the windows, dump the water, cycle of to the next row.

1 shilling per house.

They wore special jackets with huge leather pockets to hold their leather wash cloths.

1950s, northern England.

We lived in an industrial town with so much smoke and soot that windows had to be done every two weeks.

@EricLawton Thank you for the history. 🙇
@ruari his backpack is comically large for this photo.

@ruari

New thing learned today! 🚵

@RealGene Or practical bikes. Think about all the storage potential by hanging bags on the area near the front, below the cranks. #TallBikesArePractical 😉
@ruari
Or forty-two water bottles.
@ruari i find even looking at this a terrifying miracle.
How in the world do you get off😱
@mavu I stand on one pedal, swing my other leg over to the same side and jump down.
@ruari terrifying 😱🙂
@mavu It's not nearly as bad as you might imagine to be honest. 😉

@mavu this however might be a bit terrifying

https://mastodon.social/@radxberg/114612745682753329

@ruari nope nope nope nopeitnope. nein. non. nie. net. ne.
😵‍💫

@mavu I'd be happy to try it. 😆

My wife would never let me though. 😭

@ruari I'm pretty confident that even birds would politely decline to try that thing, and *they can actually fly* !
@mavu you can also reverse the mounting process but that is slower, so it is easier to just jump off.
