With conflicts erupting around the world over dwindling #water sources, financial vultures are swooping in to grab control & pump what’s left into the production of water-thirsty export crops🥑🫐. Much of the money fueling this comes from workers’ pensions https://grain.org/e/7039
Squeezing communities dry: water grabbing by the global food industry

Pension fund managers, private equity firms and other financial players are moving aggressively to snatch up lands around the world with access to water for irrigation. Their strategy is to pump as much water as they can and as fast as they can into the production of crops, like fruits and nuts, that reap high prices in export markets.

At least 42 #sovereignwealthfunds are actively invested in #food & #agriculture today. With $10 trillion to manage, they buy into giant orange groves in Brazil, cattle ranches in Australia and vertical pig farms in China.

At best, some of these funds provide food security for a few states. But they crush real visions of #foodsovereignty as they take resources away from local communities and push a capitalist, industrialist food system – be it green or not.

As a result, a civil society movement has emerged challenging the capitalist food chain and opening up alternative trajectories for the future of China's #foodsystem.

In this interview, GRAIN staff member Angus Lam discusses past and present developments in China's food system.
