Resolving the intricate role of climate in decomposition

…where we show that decomposition rates of standardised and plot-specific litter are uncorrelated, and lead to contrasted conclusions.

Resolving the intricate role of climate in litter decomposition - Nature Ecology & Evolution

Three complementary decomposition experiments across a climatic gradient in Europe, representing 110 different tree species mixtures in 194 forest plots, reveals that macroclimate is a dominant control on plant litter decomposition through both direct and indirect effects.

Last week I finally found something I've always wanted to photograph - the incredible nymph of the oribatid mite genus Cepheus.

These little beauties retain their old exoskeletons on their back every time they moult, which then build up as protective ornamental rings! Each ring you see on its back here represents one moulting event.

What octopus and human brains have in common

Cephalopods like octopuses, squids and cuttlefish are highly intelligent animals with complex nervous systems. In Science Advances, a team led by Nikolaus Rajewsky of the Max Delbrück Center has now shown that their evolution is linked to a dramatic expansion of their microRNA repertoire.

Stirling Students Union set to only serve plant-based food by 2025

Studio, Venue and Underground Coffee Shop will transition to fully plant-based catering, following a motion passed on Thursday.

Does the variability in litter chemistry converge with decomposition, and what role do soil animals play in this?

We answer this in our @[email protected] article:

Soil fauna precipitate the convergence of organic matter quality during decomposition

Hidden Processes is an exploration of the oft unseen and overlooked biological patterns belowground. The piece features 27 relief prints celebrating soil biodiversity. Each design is modeled after an organism living within the soil environment and printed using soil-based watercolor paint!

Here is a set of 30 saprobic fungi that we work with a lot in my lab (for example to characterized their traits).

Aren't they pretty??!

Hi everyone !

I'm Léa (she/her), postdoc in #Ecology at CNRS/University of Toulouse, France.

I'm interested in #SoilBiodiversity and #EcosystemFunctioning and the impacts of #GlobalChange such as #pollution.

Currently I study how a top predator (lizard) modulates the impacts of #climatechange on #belowground and #aboveground communities in a long term exciting experiment.

I mostly do #rstats now and am big fan of #metaanalysis and data synthesis in general.
