Excellent article from Rick Morton about the failures of the NACC report into Robodebt. Rick literally wrote the book on Robodebt (it's called Mean Streak and it's great).

The tl;dr is that because of NACC's conflict of interest issues, the only person left at the Commission to do the report was an inexperienced deputy, who basically took Scott Morrison, Kathryn Campbell et al at their word when they said they didn't knowingly do anything wrong.

Morton doesn't say so, but it sounds like the findings were a foregone conclusion. They picked their scapegoats and it wasn't going to be the former PM and his crony.

“Australia is an institution of racism,” the Camp Sovereignty founder, Krauatungalung elder Robbie Thorpe, told Guardian Australia on Tuesday. “It’s the institutions of this country that have allowed this to manifest. They’re running around saying stop immigration; they’re immigrants themselves.”

Australia has a long history of white nationalism, from the systemic violence inflicted on Indigenous people from the early days of British colonisation, to the White Australia policy and, more recently, its brutal offshore detention regime.

In Australia, racist violence is nothing new. But emboldened neo-Nazis form a frightening new spectre

The so-called ‘March for Australia’ echoed the Cronulla race riots – and not by accident. Are we seeing history repeating, or the start of something worse?
