I was doing a bit of research on balcony #solar and suddenly remembered I have two very small panels and a portable power pack and now I'm thinking I should do a little experiment.

Grid batteries are making a killing. A few years ago they almost did not exist (because of the price). Now they are taking over other sources of energy for peak supply. This means PV+battery just became a 24h/day energy source. With this replacement dynamics #dunkelflaute will not be a scary thing in a few years.

Every month when I get my power bill I'm thankful the previous owner of this house installed a rooftop photovoltaic system. Last month was finally sunny after many cloudy months and the panels were zipping. Electricity is 40 cents per kWh here so every free watt is a gift. My system is fairly small and has needed maintenance and repairs but it's saving me at least $100 a month.

Coal pollution is cutting solar power output worldwide, study finds

New research led by the University of Oxford and University College London (UCL) has revealed that pollution from coal-fired power plants is significantly reducing the energy output of solar photovoltaic (solar PV) installations, particularly where these are expanding side by side. The findings have been published in Nature Sustainability.

It's 7am local time here and the panels are producing 270Ws even though the sun has only just cleared our neighbours house, it means that we are already running on solar and charging the little battery.
We aren't in a position to move our heating to electric yet (lots of reasons) so our electricity consumption is fairly low.

The good news is that the panels have not fallen off overnight!

“For most of my 35-year career in power system engineering, I thought this was impossible,” Carruthers is quoted as saying. “It is a glimpse of the future and, bar the birth of my child, the most exciting thing I have ever witnessed.”

Iron ore miner Fortescue has hailed a “breakthrough moment” for its massive and growing green grid, when its inverter-based power technologies kept the lights on when bushfires caused a major transmission outage and removed all thermal generators from its network

“This event demonstrates that a large-scale industrial network can remain stable, resilient and operational using renewable energy systems alone – a milestone with benefits far beyond Fortescue’s operations”
