@L_howes I chose mastodon.social because a few other mavens were jumping into it, and its large size and age suggested stability. I figured that it would also be easy to migrate later as I learned more about the fediverse, and perhaps a chemistry/university hosted server arrived.

I honestly can't remember why I chose mastodon.social now, but it was years ago and it was a general and open server as opposed to more specific ones. I think if I was choosing now I might find it more confusing.
