Shifter Global Bike Culture Index
The goal here is to get a snapshot of the culture or vibe of cycling in a city, and then compare them to see the differences. Here's how you can participate. Go to a public location in your city that is busy with bikes. Record a video for about 20 minutes capturing cyclists passing by. Go through the video and tally up what you see, based on the categories below. Then, fill out the form below and submit it. I'll crunch the numbers and share them back with you in a future video. If you're really fast, you may be able to just observe and tally on the street, but I couldn't do it without the video. If you want it, here's a simple tally sheet to help you collect the data (download a copy of the sheet, open it using your favourite spreadsheet software. Each cyclist in your video gets a column. Add a 1 in all the relevant cells in each column. Column C will add the numbers as you go). Shout-out to Road.cc for inspiring this idea. They did something similar in London a few months ago and it's a great idea. Prizes. This is not scientific and shouldn't be mistaken for such, but it might give us an interesting snapshot highlighting the similarities and differences in the bike culture of our cities.
