I think defederating Threads is a huge missed opportunity for Mastodon to grow.

Imagine interacting with their users and letting them know that: you scroll posts without ads, your timeline is in chronological order, your client doesn’t spy on you, you only see what you want and no other content is pushed to your timeline, etc…

if I was a Threads users, I would move to Mastodon as soon as I find out 🙂

Look, there's a lot of anger and dissent in the Fediverse about the launch of Threads, but can we all at least agree that it is going to be utterly hilarious to watch Musk pretending he's not not crying as the last shreds of the platform he paid billions of dollars for go swirling down the toilet?

The Zuck suck is in full swing. In the few short hours since I started using #Threads, #DuckDuckGo has already blocked over 200 data tracking attempts. These include things like "headphone status" and "screen density."

EDIT for clarity: The 200+ attempts *may* have been overcounted as DDG hadn't tooled their VPN for Threads yet.

Since my post about the #DuckDuckGo app and #Threads is still getting lots of attention, I want to be clear about how I actually feel about #DataPrivacy. It's a lot like #recycling. Yeah it's a good thing to protect your own personal data, but if we're being honest, it's not effective on an individual scale. We need good legislation at a national level to meaningfully change the game for the benefit of us all. Until then, no matter how careful you are, you're still being negatively affected.

There’s been a lot of speculation around what Threads will be and what it means for Mastodon. We’ve put together some of the most common questions and our responses based on what was launched today:

@FeralRobots

That's a possibility but this is why I don't think that will happen:

They are avoiding the early adopter observation, "I'm here! Where's everyone else?" by seeding #Threads with already existing #Fediverse content. Slow adoption doomed Google+. #Threads won't have that problem.

One way to cripple Threads chances of success is to defederate them now so that they don't have a pre-installed base of content.

You're right that the Metaverse has flopped, but that was contingent upon people buying headsets. That's a big hurdle.

Meta has had great success with Marketplace and Groups recently too. As long as they can minimize the friction from Insta to Threads, they'll get a lot of people willing to give it a try. Many of them are probably Twitter users too and willing to check out an alternative.

I should add that on #Mastodon, it's very helpful to use hashtags.

I tend to include #science & #history in my posts, but I've also created hashtags to keep related posts easily accessible.

For example, #HistoryRemix is a series highlighting diverse pioneers in science & the arts. #SharedPlanet is all about the biodiversity of life on Earth.

The #fediverse is different than other social networks bc we get to build & curate our experience. It's us, not an algorithm. /2

Ach. Das muss man auch erst mal wissen!
This is not fine 🔥

Remember Fedifriends! ✨

Growth on the Fediverse is fantastic!
But growth costs money!

Since there are no ads to support our wonderful free-to-use connected World,

If you can afford it, supporting the administrator(s) of the instance (server) you use with a donation is very important to keep our social media thriving and ad-free  ✨

If you cannot afford it, support in time can also be very helpful to your instance’s administration team!

HOW TO ❓

1. You can generally find out who your instance’s administrator(s) is by visiting your instance's main website page. Just type its domain name in a browser without the (at) sign.

2. Most instance administrator(s) will have a donation link on their profile page. If not, you can ask them directly.

Be kind, be generous, and be supportive with your Fediverse instance admin(s)!
