A new coin was recently discovered that is thought to be the oldest known Anglo-Saxon coin. The "massively significant" find that was struck in the 7th Century. The design depicts a man dancing a jig while holding a Christian cross above a symbol linked to the Norse god Odin.

Still on the Roman Empire, and still in E-Sylum, and an interesting article on the many and sometimes confusing uses of the word Maximus / Max and finding it on coins: https://www.coinbooks.org/v28/esylum_v28n24.html#article19

Students at King's College London are learning how Roman coins were made, including the "significant disparity in portrait styles in Roman provincial coinage for which there is no good explanation" - how? By learning how dies are made and by practising striking coins themselves - it sounds a fascinating course!

A rare gold coin has been found dating back to about 640 CE, it is the oldest coin from East Anglia. On the obverse is a male in a dancing pose who is holding a cross, which is above a valknut. This is a symbol of three interlocking triangles which represent the pagan god Odin. Odin was associated with afterlife and death. It provides a link between the pagan religion and the new religion of the time being Christianity. https://arkeonews.net/earliest-known-east-anglian-gold-coin-found-a-fusion-of-pagan-and-christian-imagery/

These are the dirham coin snips from Tune. The coins were struck in the Caliphate. They were cut up like this because the Scandies didn't read Arabic and paid no attention to the denominations. They were interested in the *weight* of silver when paying for something.

Greek DRACHM --> DRHM --> Arabic DIRHAM
