Coin of Note is a personal project to share numismatic information and images of coins and exonumia I enjoy and I hope you do also.

Participant in #SaturdayNightCoinShow, #MondayMedallion, #TokenTuesday

Please note, I state what the coin etc is in the toot itself. So for most, I haven't put alt text, as it would simply be: "Image of each side of the coin / token / medal / note described in the toot" :)

@finneh
Ah sorry I missed that it was sold, that is sad that someone got duped so badly. And yes no reason for the remembrance coin to be limited. Sure, have a special mintmark limited one, but otherwise have at least as many as get ordered in say November
@finneh definitely. You'd have to look at "sold"items to see if anyone has actually paid that, but the fact people are asking that is bad. I've been upset by both the Royal Australian Mint and Australia Post for how they've handled recent releases. Not new behaviour of course, but it's only the scalpers who win out of it.
@finneh Good on you! Even moreso if you know a veteran to give it to.
I've been really disappointed with the hype over these, and i think especially of the veterans, who might have wanted one to honour their fallen mates, and the reason they can't get one is not even because they're snapped up by collectors like us, but greedy scalpers just out to make a quick buck.
Can anyone please recommend a Mastodon server aimed at #numismatics, #coin 🪙, #token, #banknote 💵, #medallion 🎖️, #exonumia, #stamp, #philately or other #hobby #collectors? Currently on the general Mastodon.Social but would love to join an instance specifically with other like minded folk :)
@Niquarl It's a commemorative medal. Ludwig II, was born 25 August 1845 and king (Koenig) of Bavaria (Bayern) from 1864 til his death on 13 June 1886. I can find a few sale ads for these, but not much on who made it or when. Here is his Wikiepdia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_II_of_Bavaria

Reminder to anyone coming from Twitter and interested in #numismatics, #coins, etc, you can follow those hashtags as you can users! Please let me know other relevant hashtags to follow - #coin, #token, #tokens all seem to be drowned by the cryptocurrency crowd. #medal / #medallion gets some and some unrelated, and #exonumia, #banknote / #banknotes aren't too popular yet (let's make them!)

Anybody know what these medals (are they even medals?) are? My dad thinks thinks they could have been his grandfather. My great-grandfather was an Irish man living in the UK if that helps? Might be something that has nothing to do with him though.
Thanks for any ideas

A skeleton stands with an hourglass and a large arrow on this silver medal commemorating Philip II of Spain (d.13 Sep 1598). Symbols of monarchy appear with reminders of death - A crown hangs off the arrow and a regal sceptre is crossed with a spade. (Rijksmuseum) #MementoMori #medal #history #histodons #spain
Two skeletons stand on either side of a tomb - each holds a scythe and an hourglass to remind the owner over the passage of time. Memorial medal for Cornelia Clementia Barchman Wuytiers, who died 7th Oct 1718. The deceased's coat of arms appears on the tomb. A medal like this might have been given to those who were close to the deceased. (@AmsterdamMuseum) #MementoMori #medal #history #histodons #numismatics #introduction
Lastly for my #SaturdayNightCoinShow tonight, a quick comparison between the penny and the half penny. Standard in size, weight and composition between #Australia and the UK, here is a 1963 1/2 and 1950 1 Penny (25.4 vs 30mm diameter). Note the #Kangaroo faces right on the 1/2 penny and left on the penny. #coins #numismatics
