Coin of Note is a personal project to share numismatic information and images of coins and exonumia I enjoy and I hope you do also.

Participant in #SaturdayNightCoinShow, #MondayMedallion, #TokenTuesday

Please note, I state what the coin etc is in the toot itself. So for most, I haven't put alt text, as it would simply be: "Image of each side of the coin / token / medal / note described in the toot" :)

Lastly for my #SaturdayNightCoinShow tonight, a quick comparison between the penny and the half penny. Standard in size, weight and composition between #Australia and the UK, here is a 1963 1/2 and 1950 1 Penny (25.4 vs 30mm diameter). Note the #Kangaroo faces right on the 1/2 penny and left on the penny. #coins #numismatics
The most recent #monarch of the #UK and Australia is Queen Elizabeth II, featured on this 1960 Half penny. The half pennies of George VI and Elizabeth II featured a sailing #ship, based on Sir Francis Drake's Golden Hind, in which he became the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe between 1577 and 1580. Brittania stayed on the penny until 1970. #SaturdayNightCoinShow #coins #numismatics
After George VI would be Edward VIII, however he abdicated before any portrait coins. He wanted his portrait to face left in defiance of convention, to show his better side. Following his abdication, George VI became King, taking a left portrait, to follow the original, proper convention. Here is another coin from #Australia, a penny from 1950. I think the bounding #kangaroo is a beautiful design. #SaturdayNightCoinShow #coins #Numismatics #Monarch #Monarchs
After Edward VII comes George V. These coins are all from my father's collection so are special to me regardless of condition. This one, is quite nice regardless. It is a 1927 Florin from #Australia. Commemorating the opening of #Parliament House (now Old Parliament House), it was Australia's first commemorative coin. 2 Million were struck for circulation (and 400 proof). #SaturdayNightCoinShow #coins
After Victoria came Edward VII, who reigned from 1901 - 1910. This 1907 #UK Half penny is the same style as the earlier Victorian one. As per convention dating back to Charles II, Edward is facing right, the opposite direction to Victoria. #coins #SaturdayNightCoinShow
It's #SaturdayNightCoinShow time! Here is a well-worn #Smoothie. It's an 1881 (or 188I) half penny from the #UK, featuring Queen Victoria and a seated Brittania #coins #numismatics
The Australian Lyrebird is an amazing creature, able to imitate the sound of anything. After a recent lion escape at Toronga Zoo (#Australia), the resident Lyrebird started mimicking the evacuation alarm! https://www.9news.com.au/national/lyrebird-mimics-siren-evacuation-warning-taronga-zoo-sydney/aefce99c-db07-42e1-84e9-c12e6ad765a4 In honour of that, here is a 1981 10 cent coin featuring the bird #news #coins

For #TokenTuesday, here is a University of New South Wales (#Australia) photo copy token. Not rare, but one thing I like with tokens is how you can find errors in affordable tokens, which are much rarer in coins (and make them very expensive). This token has a die crack #CoinErrors, #Token, #Tokens, #error #Exonumia
The Arnold Machin portrait I mentioned for the 1 cent coin was the "2nd" portrait of Elizabeth II to be used on coins from #Australia. The first was by Mary Gillick, whose portrait is seen here not on an Australian half penny, but one from the #UK - the UK coin features a three masted ship where the Australian coin of the same size and weight depicts a Kangaroo. #SaturdayNightCoinShow #Predecimal
Here are a couple of the nicer cents I've found in that bag. From 1984 & 1987. #Australia minted two circulation versions of this coin - one featuring Arnold Machin's portrait of Elizabeth II 1966 to 1984, & Raphael David Maklouf's portrait from 1985 - 1990. 1991 coins were released but only in proof and year sets rather than for circulation. By that time, the government had decided to stop minting 1 and 2 cent coins for circulation. #SaturdayNightCoinShow #SmallChange #ElizabethII
