WATCH! New mini-doc from our photographer and vlogger extraordinaire friend and fellow forest advocate, Andy Zahn. See some of the recent devastation of our forests in WA, and learn about reforms @BNR should seriously urgently adopt. Out forests are our best natural climate defense. #BestLeftStanding

Clearcutting Is Killing Our Forests | Fixing Forestry in the Pacific Northwest

The Legacy Forest Defense Coalition @legacyforestdefense is trying to stop over 2000 acres of very special legacy forests from being clearcut. Once they are gone they are gone forever, and that would be a tragedy. Please donate to the defense fund if you have means. Read more at https://gofund.me/39a7ac96

In a process that vastly reduces both waste and emissions, old buildings are turned into the raw materials for new ones. How many #forests can we avoid being clearcut if we were to on a large scale require "careful deconstruction" of older buildings and homes? #Reuse is far less wasteful that #recycle.

"Raw material extraction, manufacturing and construction account for up to 12 percent of greenhouse gas emissions and over 35 percent of the total waste generated in Europe. (The European Commission estimates that more efficient use of materials could cut 80 percent of those emissions.)"

"Under the French anti-waste law for a circular economy (AGEC), which came into force in 2020 after years of development, some 70 percent of most non-hazardous building waste had to be collected for processing in France. The objective is gradually rising, too: In 2024, the target was 82 percent, and it will increase to 93 percent by 2027."

If France can do it then so can we in PNW. Reduce waste, reduce GHGs, provide jobs, preserve our natural resources.

Reasons to be Cheerful

#JimmyCarter was the first Pres I ever got to vote for. Such a humanitarian. Also environmentalist.

One famous example is on Feb. 2, 1977, in a televised speech he delivered to the nation addressing the ongoing energy crisis. Sitting by a crackling fire in a beige cardigan, Carter told us the real problem with our unrestrained fuel consumption is “our failure to plan for the future, or to take energy conservation seriously.”

The speech was officially titled “President Jimmy Carter’s Report to the American People on Energy.” but it became known as “the sweater speech.”

The following from Columbia Insight at https://columbiainsight.org/the-night-we-lost-the-war-on-climate-change/

"Would we be living in a different world today had everyone heeded Carter’s advice and turned their thermostats to 65 in winter and kept the A/C to a minimum in summer?"

"A lot of energy would have been saved; a lot of less carbon would have been released into the atmosphere."

"Would climate change have been arrested?"

For sure "we’d be in a better place if as a country we started thinking about ways to be more environmentally self-sufficient rather than reliant on a relative handful of do-gooders to keep putting fingers in dykes."

R.I.P. our dear President Carter.

GSNR is trying to build two massive wood pellet mills in California to log our forests, converting our best natural climate defence into wood pellets, and export them overseas to make dirty electricity in power plants in Asia & Europe. Big biomass has more polluting emissions than coal. Tell Calif officials to #StopGSNR and #BigBadBiomass.

Forests Aren't Fuel — Help Keep Them Standing

The wood pellet industry is trying to take root in California — bringing with it facilities that will devastate forests, harm public health, and pollute the climate. Take action.

Feeling lost following the recent presidential election? Focus on all the fantastic election outcomes locally! Washington and the other Pacific coast states are continuing to be green leaders no matter what the future U.S. admin may do to uplift big gas, oil, coal. On that note, Sightline Institute has an excellent detailed article on 4 ways gov-elect Bob Ferguson and WA leg can build on WA's recent big climate wins: https://www.sightline.org/2024/11/07/four-ways-gov-elect-ferguson-and-washington-lawmakers-can-build-on-the-states-big-climate-win/

After Washingtonians overwhelmingly voted to keep the Climate Commitment Act, their leaders have powerful opportunities ahead.

#ClimateEmergency on full display with #HurricaneHelene. As we continue to burn fossil fuels and cause global heating to rise beyond a tipping point, #ClimateChaos "affects the lives and livelihoods of people across the world, people in every country, in every city. It's not just some people, somewhere else or some time in the future. It is here and now." This article has useful details from weather attribution science on: heavier rains and worse flooding, hurricanes and tornadoes, excessive and prolonged heat, the complexity of drought. https://phys.org/news/2024-10-hurricane-helene-climate-scientists.html
Hurricane Helene's reach was shocking, another example of how climate change 'is here and now,' scientists say

Many people were stunned to see the intense flooding and devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina communities, located inland and tucked thousands of feet above sea level in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Jaime Herrara-Beutler (R) running for WA Commissioner of Public Lands has just been listed on the 2024 Dirty Dozen of the States list.

"Dirty Dozen in the States have consistently sided against the environment and are a danger to our democracy. These candidates are chosen regardless of party affiliation and are running in races prioritized by LCV state affiliates in the Conservation Voter Movement." https://www.lcvvictoryfund.org/news/2024-dirty-dozen-in-the-states/
