It rained last night in the wee hours, and everything is warm and damp this morning as I set out to Roosevelt Circle a minute or two behind, arriving at 7:33 and setting up. Craige is out today so I am a soloist. I set up my big sign, couple my speaker, and take my seat on the railing. The hand-held sign for today is 2021 IPCC REPORT: "CODE RED" FOR HUMANITY.

I wake with the alarm, cut two thin slices of bread for toast, and have a few quiet minutes with my coffee before hitting the road, arriving at Roosevelt Circle at 7:30 precisely. Craige arrives a couple of minutes later after I'm set up and singing. Today's hand-held message is CLIMATE CHAOS INCREASES THE LIKELIHOOD OF THE NEXT PANDEMIC.

It takes me a while to wake up properly this morning once the alarm goes off. I stare groggily at the room, cudgel my wits into a semblance of order, and lurch downstairs for pre-vigil coffee. Heading out, I reach Roosevelt Circle at 7:31, greet Craige, and set up my various signs. Today's hand-held message is EVERY DISASTER MOVIE STARTS WITH A SCIENTIST BEING IGNORED.

The question is not simply "market vs state". The deeper question is: how do we organise society when facing crises that demand collective action?

History shows that during major emergencies, societies shift into forms of collective mobilisation - redirecting resources, prioritising needs, and acting beyond normal market logic.

The challenge is building those responses without reproducing authoritarian control.

We need systems that are adaptive, democratic, and focused on human needs.

The climate crisis is not only a technology problem. It is a systems' problem.

The hard-right and #climatechaos feed each other in a vicious cycle.

Climate breakdown drives displacement, insecurity, and social stress. The right exploits that suffering to spread fear, hatred, and division. As they gain power, climate action is weakened to protect existing wealth and fossil-fuel interests, leading to worse climate impacts and displacement.

The result? More refugees, more scapegoating, more environmental collapse, and more authoritarian politics.

Stopping #climatechaos and stopping the rise of fascism are not separate struggles. They are the same struggle viewed from different angles.

The answer isn't more noise. It's rebuilding solidarity, strengthening grassroots alternatives, and creating collective solutions that challenge both environmental destruction and the politics of fear.

I reach Roosevelt Circle at 7:29; Craige is already there, so we exchange greetings and I set up my sign and speaker, then lean on the railing holding LET'S BUILD A BETTER FUTURE TOGETHER.
