@StephenCurry 's blog "Reciprocal Space" is now part of the Rogue Scholar community too.

Which means among other things, the super famous "Sick of Impact Factors" blog post now has its own DOI: 10.59350/xqrv5-7bv94

What would you change about academia life?

There’s a discussion on bsky about saying “no” to service requests. But really, why is it even such an issue? A healthy institution or community should be able to spread the load. This is a strange job.

Every time you use #ChatGPT, half a litre of #water goes to waste
#GenerativeAI already uses as much energy as a small country and is predicted to rival that of Japan within a year. Such searches use 10 times the energy of a normal web search. “We’re wasting a lot of water with these systems, and very few people realise that it’s a major problem. That’s why I think personally the No.1 priority for the sector should be #sustainability. Not the #AI race.”

Ever wondered why walking around museums is weirdly tiring? At normal speed our legs act like pendulums, swinging forward from the hip & saving us a huge amount of energy. In "museum shuffle" our muscles must do ALL the work of constant readjustment. So cake in the cafe is scientifically justified 🥳
