@ricci @dev that was my first reaction, but then someone pointed out to me that Pittsburgh is only about 30 miles from the border with Ohio which is clearly in the midwest so now I am confused

@dan @ricci @dev as someone who grew up there and now lives in Chicago (and whose dad was from NJ): I believe the culture to be Midwest, with elements of both Appalachia and East Coast visible, but from the Western edge (where I grew up) to Chicago is as Midwest as anywhere in between, IMO. My wife however disagrees, and feels the culture is more East Coast than Midwest. 🤷

@logosity @dan @ricci @dev Buffalo is right on the Soda/Pop, and Resis/Ree-sees lines. Pittsburgh is right about at our longitude, so my vote is that like us, it's borderline midwest.

@ricci @dev when my dad was born (not too far away on the Ohio side), this was the only pizza available in Ohio, and it had just been introduced.

This might explain why my grandmother never ordered a pizza delivery in her life.

Subsequently, when she was forced to move to a new town in Ohio at least once per year, she made it a point to go to entirely different churches so she could rank the denominations. On the quality of their baked goods.

@regehr @dan @ricci @dev Steubenville is known for pottery. (As is that whole corner of Ohio — apparently there's good clay there?) Weirton is known for steelmaking (one guess as to the name of the company's founder).

@regehr @ricci @dev yes, my dad’s family lived in Steubenville at one point (and tbh pretty much every other town in Ohio because this was the era when your employer could just reassign you to another random place and you’d pack up and move your entire family)

@gcvsa @dan @ricci @dev I'll confess that I haven't, and I'm the poorer for it (as several CMU friends will happily remind me =).

Living in Missouri, Minnesota, Arkansas, and Kansas informed my biases which strongly lead me to feel that "Mountains" and "Midwest" don't properly go in the same sentence. Utterly irrational, I'm sure.

Super curious to hear more. How does it feel Midwestern?

@purp I mean, don't get me wrong, I can totally see how people from, say, Duluth or Wichita or Rapid City might have a very different conception of what "Midwest" means, but I'm originally from NYC and went to university at CMU. I've also lived for many years in Philadelphia. There is a fundamental distinction btw Philly and Pittsburgh, because of the fact that PGH is on the other side of the mountains. It's definitely the most eastern of the Midwest, but it's also definitely NOT "East Coast".

@dan @ricci @dev to me the more interesting question is how far west the midwest goes. for ex I've always considered Kansas to be the midwest but there are those who disagree
