Diving into Mastodon a bit like the chaffinch diving off this branch. Hi everyone, I'm John a hobbyist wildlife photographer based in Scotland. I currently upload all of my images to Flickr but I'm wanting somewhere else to share some of them too. Still not quite sure how Mastodon works but hope to view yours and share more of my wildlife and nature photographs.

@johnmwildlife Welcome John. There's a nice community of photographers here. I'm on the USA side of the Atlantic, but it seems to me there are more photographers here from your side. To get visibility adding hashtags is important. I generally add #birds #birdphotography and #naturephotography . Addding ALT text to your images is strongly encouraged. I'm adding in a photo of a double-crested cormorant drying its wings -- while swimming -- just so followers of those tags don't feel cheated!
@Cliftographer Thank you for the lovely welcome and advice. Glad to hear there's a good community here - I look forward to participating. Great photo of a cormorant too!! Love the detail on the wing; you've been able to get close enough to really show it off. I was photographing one the other day at the beach but on reflection think I was too far away for it to be a great photo. I still need to process it so maybe I'll be surprised.
@johnmwildlife You are very welcome. Yes, this cormorant was floating by on a narrow river with a path right alongside, so that's close to an uncropped image. Look forward to seeing your work when you are able to post it.
@Cliftographer That's incredible! I hope to have one come that close to me soon.

@johnmwildlife Welcome John! I look forward to seeing your photos and hearing more about the wildlife in Scotland. My first visit there was last September and I've been planning a return since then.
@mxhdroom Thanks Gary! Hopefully they don't disappoint - I'm still quite new to it and by no means 'professional'. Glad you enjoyed your first trip here enough to want to come back. We're blessed with some incredible landscapes and environments.

@johnmwildlife

📷 Welcome

You will find a vibrant photography community on Mastodon (and the FediVerse)

@NoRomBasic Thank you for the warm welcome! Already amazed at the welcome I've received.
Welcome! Thanks for bringing your work here! Looking forward to seeing what you have to share with us!
@Weird_Willow Thank you - It's really appreciated!

@johnmwildlife Hi John. Hope you enjoy it here!

I'm on Mastodon.scot where people like @vivdunstan regularly post lovely bird photographs. Worth having a scroll through the posts on this instance if you're interested in local connections. If you haven't already discovered it, I found https://fedi.tips very helpful when I was new to Mastodon, too.

Edited to correct link!

@cameraobscura Thank you for the lovely welcome! Will check out Mastodon.scot and the tips link you shared. Also have enjoyed looking through yours and @vivdunstan 's profile as per your recommendation!
@johnmwildlife My husband's photos of birds - many many more than I post here - go onto his Flickr page https://www.flickr.com/photos/mndunstan He also has a Flickr album dedicated to dippers. He mainly photographs birds in weekly walks to the wooded river valley near our home. As well as beside the River Tay in Dundee, and at the Swannie Ponds (named after the swans there, among other birds) also in the city. https://www.flickr.com/photos/mndunstan/albums/72157719780552972/

@johnmwildlife welcome! You’re in the right place for wildlife photography. Lots of bird nerds around here!
@joannaholman Thanks Joanna - glad to have found some like-minded people!
@johnmwildlife Welcome to the fediverse. The hashtags are free. Some are spelled oddly. Examples are #LichenSubscribe, #Mosstodon, #Bloomscrolling
@Pollinators
Also - don't worry about mixing languages! Translation works great for the most part, as long as the language tags on the posts line up
@johnmwildlife
@Pollinators Thank you! Yes - I noticed some of the spellings. Looking forward to finding more. I'm also an avid gardener albeit in a very different zone - 9a I believe it is!
