This morning's science-experiment-gone-wrong

Had some hard boiled eggs which were not boiled long enough (dyed for Easter).

Decided I did not like soft boiled eggs

Cracked the egg, and put it in the microwave for a minute

Looked fine. Took it back to the table, started to peel it... moments later, EGG EXPLOSION EVERYWHERE. EGG ACROSS KITCHEN.EGG IN HAIR. EGG ON FACE. EGG ON WALL. EGG ON CEILING.

(that is all)

@ai6yr 😳 😳 😳
@ai6yr I thought you were required to do all your experiments in the back yard??!
@ai6yr Although I guess you can be forgiven this once: it was actually an eggspiriment πŸ€ͺ
@ai6yr
My first step-dad discovered the same thing in the 1980's. Maybe he should have a plaque in a museum somewhere? πŸ€”
@me_valentijn @ai6yr His plaque is in every hotel breakfast room "Do Not Microwave Hard Boiled Eggs"

@davebauerart
And what about soft boiled eggs? πŸ€” πŸ€ͺ
I want to talk to an eggspert!!

@me_valentijn @ai6yr

@ai6yr Serves you right for egg abuse.
@ai6yr You can microwave eggs and they come out fine, but they do need room to expand (I discovered that microwave scrambled egg thing a couple of months ago and it's really nice when it's too hot to want to turn the stove on, just an egg and stirred with some sort of thick/heavy fat, sour cream seems to work well but I've also done heavy cream and I think the original recipe was with crème freche)

@ai6yr

I love science, it can explode even our own deeply held beliefs.

Hope you're okay.

I, early, learned a science lesson when I accidentally set fire to a sheet of aluminum foil. I was sure, at age seven, that aluminum could not burn because Mom wrapped potatoes in foil before tossing in the fire. I did not realize a sheet of foil explodes in flames if held vertically to a lit match held at the bottom. (Do not try this inside!)

@ai6yr yipe. Glad you're ok (the shell fragments would worry me)

@ai6yr

I'm so sorry that you had this learning moment...

I, also, am not fond of soft boiled eggs, and have re-boiled them on occasion. It never occurred to me to try the microwave, and I am now glad I didn't.

@ai6yr well that's an eggstrodinary way to start the day

@ai6yr My brother did something similar once. But with golf balls. He thought they seemed too chilly and maybe warming them up would be good that morning. They seemed ok when he took them out.

He put them in his pocket and left the house.

Luckily the resulting explosion did not impact any nearby body parts. But it could have gone really wrong....

@mem_somerville @ai6yr But it would be a hilarious practical joke to play on a golfing buddy about to hit his drive with everyone watching.
@msbellows @ai6yr I was thinking that if one happened to have a directed microwave sort of apparatus that some havoc could occur....
@mem_somerville @ai6yr I am puzzled on the delay in both cases. Only thing I can think of is steam build up in the egg that broke whatever was containment. The Golf ball no idea, not familiar with their construction.

@CliffsEsport @ai6yr It sounds like the beginning of a science paper that would would an Ig Nobel.

I want to be on it if you go that route....

@ai6yr Please video your next science experiment.

@ai6yr

look for the mythbusters episode about the exploding jawbreaker candies...

@ai6yr I'm sorry to hear about the eggsplosion of your breakfast.

@ai6yr Sometime about a decade ago (i.e. before COVID/WFH), a coworker did something similar in the break room microwave.

Long story short, burning eggshells smell a lot like burning hair, and I discovered that I'm a "run toward the gunfire" person.

@eedly @ai6yr it's good to wear polycarbonate lens glasses and long sleeved shirts in the workplace once one has this realization
@ai6yr 😱 a whole minute? That was extremely brave of you. Very bad idea, but brave.
Like playing with a grenade...
😜

@ai6yr OMG, I hope you are ok, no burns ... sounds like a real mess!

And maybe your story will help others keep from making the same mistake!

That’s amazing.
I did have to replay to confirm he did turn the burner off once things got really exciting.

@Legit_Spaghetti @ai6yr

Omigosh they are attack gnochii!!!!

@Legit_Spaghetti @ai6yr
you can microwave eggs, like @SRLevine says they just need space to expand (I've tried it and it works and they taste normal):

@Legit_Spaghetti HA! Finally watched this, that was about how I was laughing when the egg exploded.
@ai6yr
Oh no!
@NorcalGma2 Fortunately, no damage to anyone, just egg bits everywhere. I was laughing so hard for 5 minutes. I knew they would explode if you microwaved them WHOLE, I thought a cracked egg (with white exposed) would surely not explode as well.
@ai6yr @NorcalGma2 I bet that when you cracked the egg, the membrane stayed intact...
@Darkphoenix @NorcalGma2 No idea! I won't do it again, lol. The explosion happened when I put a fork in between the white and the yolk, so there must be some other membranes/etc. in there that build up pressure. It was impressive, eggwhite everywhere!!!!
@ai6yr @NorcalGma2 Oh I bet! I once saw the aftermath covering the inside of the microwave after a roommate put an uncracked egg in the microwave. It was hard to believe the level of devastation that a single egg can create.
@ai6yr @NorcalGma2 Yeah. I made that mistake once. Only once.
@ai6yr this is why I always bap the closable egg cooking tray on the counter after I get it out from the microwave. You have one eggslposion and you learn your lesson.

@ai6yr A frag grenegg. You shelled your own kitchen.

These puns would be funnier if there were no wars going on right now though.

@datum Ah yes, war jokes are funnier with no war.
@ai6yr An eggcelent science eggsperiment!
@ai6yr I microwave myself a McMuffin style egg puck many mornings. One minute at 60% in a plastic bowl with nonstick spray and a paper towel over it. Works perfectly.
@ai6yr but beware: it absolutely will explode at 100% power!

@sfoskett @ai6yr

there are little silicon molds they make for this too, i prefer them over microwaving plastic

@ai6yr What a terrible way to start the day. Eggsplosion: a cautionary tale. I hope you have recovered!!
@firefly I was only laughing uncontrollably for 5 minutes. I knew you weren't supposed to microwave WHOLE eggs, I didn't think a cracked egg (with white exposed) would ALSO explode.
@ai6yr @firefly and now *all of us* of this select group in your realm also know.
I could *easily* imagine doing that experiment myself.
@ai6yr @firefly You would’ve needed to poke a hole through to the yolk, where the pressure seems to have built up. πŸ˜ƒ
@ai6yr @firefly If it makes you feel better, I was helping a recently widowed friend with his cooking repertoire, since his wife had been the cook, and he was so excited to learn he could microwave potatoes, faster than baking in oven. I very clearly explained the importance of many holes in the potatoes, so they wouldn’t explode. He forgot, but only once. πŸ˜ƒ

@CStamp @ai6yr @firefly

Must do this in the regular oven too! My mother always told me to but I ignored her because nothing ever happened.. until the day it did ... Pow! One time for me too. Should have listened to momma!

@AdrianRiskin @ai6yr @firefly Yep. though once you forget once, you don’t forget it again. πŸ˜ƒ
@CStamp @ai6yr @firefly This is weird because I've microwaved baking potatoes a hundred times at least. Never poked holes first, and they have never exploded. Curious. I sort of look forward to the day it happen now. Unasked for tip... if you have an air fryer to finish them off for about 8 minutes they are even nicer.
