Microsoft Copilot terms of service have been updated to include this gem: "Copilot is for entertainment purposes only." https://www.theregister.com/2026/04/02/copilot_terms_of_service/
Even Microsoft knows Copilot shouldn't be trusted with anything important

: Terms admit it is for entertainment only and may get things wrong

The Register

@GossiTheDog #copilot will be excited to find this one day >.<

#alttext "adapted 2012 Tom Toro New Yorker cartoon - the original caption read "Yes, the planet got destroyed, but for a beautiful moment in time we created a lot of value for shareholders" - here the text reads "WHAT HAPPENED TO THE WORLD DADDY? WE DESTROYED IT, BUT FOR ONE BEAUTIFUL MOMENT IN TIME, WE HAD COPILOT ENTERTAINMENT""

@GossiTheDog the same that is part of Microslop Office? The office suite used by millions upon millions of public administration workers? No way! πŸ˜†

@jt_rebelo @GossiTheDog The one where they advertise that CoPilot can do your Excel well enough to run your business for you

For entertainment purposes only of course. Hilarity ensues when the tax man cometh to see the spreadsheets that copilot cooked for you!

@Jer @jt_rebelo @GossiTheDog You mean that copilot won't be somehow bringing back the $1 slice to save an imaginary small business and cool inflation?
@fuzzyfuzzyfungus @jt_rebelo @GossiTheDog At the end of that commercial I imagine the guy being unable to pay his rent because the budget that copilot hallucinated for him to bring back the $1 slice doesn't add up and he's been losing .75 on every slice he sells

@jt_rebelo @GossiTheDog Strictly speaking that's the ToS for the 'consumer' version; so it's even more expansive in its data collection; but I don't think that MS actually has anything better for Fancy Enterprise Copilot 365 (E5); except possibly more aggressive 'burn more tokens if the first time seemed too nonsensical' defaults.

At least the consumer ToS assures us that "you may stop using copilot at any time" your average Azure tenant sure doesn't make it seem that way.

@GossiTheDog Wow that was the best laugh of the year so far. Thanks!
@GossiTheDog Lawyers covering their butts.

@GossiTheDog I'm laughing as hard as I can.

Oh, wait - I thought about the M$ investors and now I'm laughing even harder.

Copilot is hella entertaining.

@GossiTheDog thats a hell of a lot of resources going up in smoke for "entertainment". Perhaps we should go back to going to the pub and watching the telly.
@GossiTheDog they’re just a bunch of silly guys making silly toys!
@GossiTheDog I'd love to know what the legal consequences are, if any, of using something which is "for entertainment purposes only" in a professional or commercial context. Could it be evidence of, for example, gross negligence?

@womble @GossiTheDog "For Entertainment Purposes Only" is the disclaimer that Tarot Readers and Astrologers have to put on their businesses in some jurisdictions to avoid being charged with fraud

The fact that they've slapped it on copilot tells me that their legal team has concerns

@GossiTheDog
"Entertainment"??? 🀨

Me: "CoPilot: What was the capitol of East Germany?"

CoPilot: "Okay. Two dogs walk into a beer hall in East Berlin..."

@GossiTheDog "These Terms don’t apply to Microsoft 365 Copilot apps or services unless that specific app or service says that these Terms apply." - Satya the Clown, after renaming Microsoft 365 to Microsoft 365 Copilot.
@GossiTheDog Satya wears a flower on his vest. "Smell it!" he says. Nobody wants to, but they all have to say, "maybe later." Just to amuse himself, even when nobody smells the flower, Satya regularly squeezes the hidden bladder. Slop squirts out of the flower. Nobody enjoys this.
@GossiTheDog
You have to admit, though... trying to use it for work can be highly entertaining.
Or, well... you have to laugh, because otherwise you'd have to cry, right?

@GossiTheDog

Does that mean it will be banned in workplaces like video games because workers should be working not entertaining themselves ?

@GossiTheDog So, we're calling bombing schools and civilians entertainment now?
@GossiTheDog
"Let me-eeeeee entertain you" -- Satya Nadella... probably. πŸ‘¨β€πŸŽ€
@GossiTheDog billions of dollars burned "for entertainment purposes"...
@GossiTheDog ah yes, Microsoft Copilot 365: my favorite Entertainment Software Suite
@GossiTheDog If I want entertainment, I won’t be asking Copilot, which has been banished from my computers anyway.. So many better ways to entertain myself!

@GossiTheDog

Smells like a pending lawsuit in the offing ...

@GossiTheDog And who among us wasn't already thinking fun and giggles when we were working with Excel?

@GossiTheDog This part makes it sound like a little dictator buddy.

"IMPORTANT DISCLOSURES & WARNINGS...

For example, we can’t promise that any Copilot’s Responses won’t infringe someone else’s rights (like their copyrights, trademarks, or rights of privacy) or defame them. You are solely responsible if you choose to publish or share Copilot’s Responses publicly or with any other person."

@GossiTheDog Well, well. The ideal "productivity booster" for any business-related activity using a Windows PC, which Microslop has been pushing desperately and obsessively onto every Windows user on the planet, in fact even onto hardware, demanding a new key on keyboards from laptop-manufacturing partners, now turns out to be "for entertainment purposes only." Well, well, well, you don't say...

New Microslop motto to expect next ought to be therefore something like: "Entertainment, the new key to business productivity"

@GossiTheDog so, if my boss tells me to use copilot, can i refuse by pointing out that it's for entertainment purposes only and shouldn't be used for work?
@GossiTheDog well I do always laugh a lot when people talk about the garbage so πŸ€·πŸΏβ€β™€οΈ
@GossiTheDog Entertaining only if you enjoy masochism.

@GossiTheDog

And I still won't use it.

@GossiTheDog
new desktop icon: πŸ€Ήβ€β™‚

It was named Visual *Studio* Code for a reason.

Code, linter, action! πŸŽ¬πŸ€“

@GossiTheDog AI will take everyone's jobs, but you can't trust its work.
Solid business plan

@GossiTheDog

Copilot: Securing it's place alongside 1-900 fortune tellers.

@GossiTheDog

"I always need a little entertainment while using ... Notepad."

@GossiTheDog

TechBro's: AI means you can sack all your staff

TechBro's Lawyers: AI; For entertainment purposes only.

@GossiTheDog the return of windows games
@GossiTheDog I am not entertained!
@GossiTheDog afaik not a recent addition
@GossiTheDog I do feel like CEOs, CFOs, and heads of HR have been getting tremendous entertainment value out of copilot and workers' suffering, yes.
@GossiTheDog Looks like Github is going dataming with Copilot.
@GossiTheDog @64bithero The terms were probably written by Copilot too.
@GossiTheDog I mean, they're not wrong.
@GossiTheDog Entertainment for a captive audence. Thank dog I run Linux. One of the non-systemd ones.
@GossiTheDog Well, it’s true that, when skipping all its depressing parts, the AI dramas and absurdities around it can be qualified as entertaining. 😐
